Now that I'm finally ready to assemble the engine... I'm toying around with the idea of changing the camshaft. The best the car ran before with the old 289 headed engine was 7.48 @ 93 (off the bottle). This was set up for nitrous with a 236/248 @ 0.050" Comp 'Magnum' camshaft with a 110 degree lobe seperation.I'm thinking about going for more naturally aspirated power. The cam in it right now is a 'nitrous' grind consisting of Comp's 'tight lash' lobes, measuring 242/254 @ 0.050" with a 110 lobe seperation. I'm thinking about going with something with a little less exhaust duration and a 108 lobe seperation... maybe around a 242/250 with a 108 lobe seperation. (a chebby buddy of mine has a chevelle that has run 7.27 in the 1/8 no bottle)
I'll be cutting it close with the nitrous cam when the bottle is turned off. Ehhh... maybe I'll just put a steeper gear in it for n/a runs and keep the existing bumpstick for now.
Oh well, I'll definitely have to install those 1-3/4" Tubular Automotive 'race' headers I got off Mark Tallent either way. The slip joints don't seem all that tight, so they will probably leak pretty bad... but I've got to at least try the dern things! Maybe a small tailpipe expander from Harbor Freight is in order.
Only bad thing, is I'll have to grind out the adapter plates to match the heads... which means my nice CLEANED and bagged heads will need torn down and scrubbed yet AGAIN. Those wedge shaped allen bolts that fasten the plates to the heads will also be cut into... which will be a PITA.
Oh well... just rambling and thinking out loud. (I need to spend more time working and less time thinking...)
Back to the garage!
