I have a vibration in my car, and I'm not real sure where to start looking to find it. It happens when the car is under power, moderate or wide open, and mostly in low gear (running a powerglide.) The vibration goes away about a second and a half after I shift into high during a pass. When warming the car up, I have gotten up a good head of steam and kicked it into neutral, and as soon as it comes out of gear the vibration is gone. That tells me it can't be a bad tire, and probably not driveshaft or ring and pinion and more than likely not convertor related. Even when it has the 'head of steam' up in neutral and I free rev the motor, the vibration is non-existant. That tells me it's not motor related. This isn't a little vibration either, it's pretty strong and I am rather worried it's going to tear something up. But since I don't know where to look, I don't have much chance of finding it till it does break something. I really thought the low gear planetaries were going out, but after almost 2 dozen passes, the vibration hasn't changed (hasn't gotten worse, hasn't gotten better) so I've kind of given up that idea. I hope someone has some ideas (and no, swapping the 'glide out isn't feasable as I don't have a C4 convertor I trust right now.)

PS, the car is running mid 6.40's at almost 109 mph (went 6.45 @ 108.97 tonite)

Rob, check the yoke to see if it is riding to far in the tailshaft while under power. Mine did that same thing right after I swapped to a glide. I thought I left plenty out BUT......Turned out the DR- shaft was just 1/2 inch too long. It was BARELY making contact only while under load. I guess the housing rotated just enough, pushing it forward. Caused the whole car to "shudder" under load.

Probably ain't it, but it's something you can easily check.

PS: or it it isnt "quite" far enough engaged?

When using &$#*%$#* powerslides the adapters cause a terrible "line up".
Disconnect the converter and check the clearances at the mounting pads to the flex palte.
A simple fix may be to just spin the converter to the next pad.

Thanks for the ideas, but I think I found the problem, actually problems. Before unloading the car this morning, I crawled under it (a much easier tasks since the center of our trailer is open), and checked the driveshaft/trans yoke alignment. The tail of the transmission is pointed down and not lined up straight with the driveshaft. Secondly, the tailshaft bushing is now located on the slip yoke and not in the transmission anymore. Looks like I need to raise the trans mount up a bit, and press in a new bushing.

PS, I have a JW UltraBell on it if that makes any difference.

Yep.

Thankfully that is the last of the previous owner screw ups. I assumed since they ran it with that homemade crossmember that it must have been correct and I never checked the alignment. I should have known with as screwed up as everything else was on the car that was also going to be wrong. Luckily I caught it before something broke.

I raised the trans 1/2" and stuck a new tailshaft housing on it. The vibration went away. The car ran a touch faster today too, but that might have been due to the good air we had. It went 6.37 @ 110 mph with a mediocre 1.44 60' time.
