Well Bobby at Smith Racing engines completed my engine last week and we took it over to Randy Harshman at Harshman Automotive today to run on his engine dyno. We made a couple of changes to the engine over the winter so here they are. AFR 185 heads, Eagle I beam rods. Total seal rings, New push rods(needed longer one for these heads), Mildon oil pan and windage tray. You can look at my signature to see what we started with. We made a total of nine pulls on the dyno, playing with timing and another carb.We were using Hooker 1 5/8 headers that were not port matched to the heads. Here are the numbersRandy's Dyno 419.0 hp @ 5548rpm 422.3 tq. @ 4613rpm Desk top dyno 452 hp @ 6000rpm 455 tq @ 4500rpm There seems to be a difference of approx 35hp and 34ft-lb torque between the two. If so when you use those numbers against what I was running on the engine in my signature this is how the numbers looked. Desk top dyno 349 hp @ 5000 416 tq @ 3500 Approx. engine dyno numbers. 314 hp @ 5000rpm approx. 382 tq @ 3500rpm approx. So there fore the AFR 185 heads added approx 100 hp and 40ft-lb of torque to my engine.I have some pics and a short video if some one would like to post them for me

Thanks Alex, How much horse power and torque would it take to make it a wheel stander like Steve and Mel's 66 ? Battery is relocated to trunk, 6 cylinder springs, aluminum radiator, and I need to get some front drag shocks.------------------ 1968 coupe 351W, Bored.030,Stock Crank, Stock Rods,Decked,KB Hyper. flat top pistons. You're there HP wise. Get the suspension and converter right, learn to apply what you have and you can wheel stand with the best of us. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked." The converter is a worked over ATI that stalls at 3500 and flashes to 4300 right at my peak torque. I hope this will help. By the way I completly reworked the front suspension parts with poly bushings with plenty of free travel in them. I also put poly bushings in my spring perches and polished the shafts to free up some movement, then I add grease zerks to keep them from sticking. I'm up in the air about replacing the rear spring.------------------ 1968 coupe 351W, Bored.030,Stock Crank, Stock Rods,Decked,KB Hyper. flat top pistons. Very What timing made the best power? What compression ratio are you running. I have less cam and around 10-1 compression. I was told my motor was good for about 350-360hp. ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

Alex, what would you recomend for a converter ?Scoop, The timing that gave the best readings was 32 total. The compression is 11.3 to 1 ------------------ 1968 coupe 351W, Bored.030,Stock Crank, Stock Rods,Decked,KB Hyper. flat top pistons. Sorry Greg, I meant to answer this the other night but got kinda busy and forgot. I assume that you have a 10 inch now? That's ATI's standard patented "push on everyone deal". You need an 8 inch for starters. The small diameter will spool up to max flash stall quickly which is what a SBF needs. You have to be over peak torque because of recovery. That is if you want to realize and apply all of the horsepower you worked so hard to make and pay for. Sounds like you need a converter very similar to the one that is in Tony's Capri. About 4400 stall with 4800 flash. Contact JPT at 517-663-0578 or [email protected] and tell him I referred you and you are from M&M. He will hook you up with the right piece at the right price.

Thanks Alex, You are right about the ATI being a 10" it is one of their Street Master ones that use to stall at around 2200. I took it to a fellow in Hanover Pa that reworks converters and he got it to where it is now 3500 stall 4300 flash. My question is how would this 8" you recomend be if I were to run it on the street ?

mine yanks the wheels (not as high as alex)and im running 6 inch bfg radials/6 inch welds up front. besides the converter, i was thinking the cam looked like it could go bigger and not hurt a thing. maybe yours is perfect for an auto. i know what you mean about the 1 5/8 hooker long tubes, thats what i got bolted to my afr165 heads and the head ports are bigger than the primaries so i know its costing me. the afr 165 and 185 share the exact same exaust port/valve dimensions. i dont know if anybody makes a set with 1 3/4 primary tubes that will snake around my z-bar as sweetly as the hookers. kinda jealous you got to play on the dyno. besides my own dragstrip and twin turbo 408, a dyno is one of the things on my lottery winnings list. if theres any money after that i might buy my wife a riding mower, she deserves it. ------------------ 67 coupe, 650dp and rpm intake on 5.0 with afr 165 heads, 4 speed, 4.11's.....best so far is [email protected] in 1/8 mile with 1.79 60ft. time.
