I am trying to get my air intake system finished up. I made uo a enclosure for the carb, and have it sealed to ther hood OK, just need to do some more work on the inside rear of the hood. The other area that is giving me some trouble is I need to go to a taller filter, and do not have the room. I want to add a scoop wide enough that the filter can go up into the scoop some. To do this, considering the filter is 14 inches in dia, and the engine is not centered, I need a scoop from 18 to 22 inches wide, about 24 to 25 inches long, and about 2 inches high so it does not add to much to the cowls height.

Here is the enclosure

Here is the hood with a 79 Mustang GT scoop mocked up on it. A little to close for comfort at the fronts with its 24 1/2 inch width.

With a 2 inch scoop, I will be able to use a decent filter, and add a K&N top filter.

Any ideas. I would like to keep it in the 2 to 2 1/2 inch height max range.

The enclosure has 2 1/2 inch drop base and the filter is 3 inches.

This leaves me with not enough room between the carb inlet and the filter top. I want to use a 4 inch filter to raise the top. but it is too close to the hood with out a scoop being added. To give room for the filter, the scoop needs to be 18 to 22 inches wide and 2 1/2 to 3 inches high to allow a 4 inch filter with a K&N top to fit.

The hood has a slight curve to it, so I will have to cut the profile of any scoop to follow the profile.

I may try a Boss 429 or Eliminator scoop from Crites.

Fastmyz, what is the size of yours, and where did you get it? It is a little tall to go on my cowl hood, but may have to cut one down some. I think the Eliminator would be close with 2 inch at the front, if it will clear the center of the filter. Maybe the Boss trimed to 2 1/2 would do it.

I had a Boss 429 scoop from Crites on my 69. Really liked it. Here are some pics with a 4" tall K&N. The breather is the 13" Ford Racing unit. Used on top of a 383W with a Vic Jr intake, 1" open spacer and 950HP carb.

I *think* the scoop measured 27"X22"X 3.5" tall at the front. It was suppsoed to be an exact copy of Boss 429 sccop as far as size goes.

Since this is going on a 3 inch cowl hood, I want to keep it as low as possible. I decided to go with the 2 inch high Eliminator scoop, and add a 1/2 inch spacer between the K Member and the body to lower the engine a 1/2 inch.

Won't dropping the K-member also drop the lower control arm mounts? I'm not sure which car you're working on and the particulars of the front end construction. But lowering the lower control arm mounts could upset the front end geometry.

It is a 93 Thunderbird. The engine, steering rack and lower control arms are all mounted to the Kmember on this. The lower arms are fully adjustable to compensate for the slight change in caster it would cause.

Hey, I see you are from Greenbriar. I went to school in Springfield, then spent 22 years seeing the world in Army. Settled in Clarksville. Still own some land is Springfield. Hav'nt been to Union Hill since the last big SS meet last Fall. Hope to be there next month with the Bird.
