I was reading an archived post of what type of full to use in a high comp engine.a couple posts said high comp is a "time bomb" on the street,Why is that?
Also...what the heck is detonation.Read abt it,heard abt it,dont understand it.I'll be running 13:93 comp on the street and will run race fuel...will I be having problems?

I'm also going to be running a high comp. Cleveland. Now to answer your question about detonation or preignition as it is sometimes called. Basically what happens is that the fuel mixture in the cylinder ignites before the piston reaches top dead center. This, of course, is a very bad thing because the subsequent explosion try's to turn the engine in the wrong direction. The heat generated by higher compression ratios only exaggerates this problem. To battle this we must use higher octane fuel. Note: The lower the octane, the lower the flash point of the fuel. In other words, it takes less heat to ignite 87 octane than it does to ignite 100 octane fuel. I hope this explanation helps.

I have recently run a 13:1 289 on the street with no problems. But, it never had anything less than 110 octane fuel. I plan to run my Cleveland on the street some. Mostly it will see drag strip duty in heads-up street car competition. I'm using arias domed pistons with a closed camber head and I hope to achieve about 14:1 similar to yours. Good luck with your combo. I hope it runs like a dream.

Thanks for the education. That said in a nut shell,I now understand detonation and the results of it.Another question though.I have a 10 gallon fuel cell in my car.Would it be acceptable to run 5 gallons of 110 octane and 91 octane pump Gas?

Maybe if you only had 12-1 compression. But with almost 14-1, you will need full race gas, and good racegas at that.

You might be able to get away with that mix, but I sure wouldn't try it. Detonation ruins parts.

I'd run straight 114 or 118 octane in that bad boy.
