I've never had a torque converter problem before so I'm not sure what the symptoms are when a converter dies. I have just rebuilt my trans for the second time this year and it still does not feel right. It shifts fine on the jackstands, and reverse is just fine even when driving up and down the driveway. First doesn't seem right though. It does not pull against the converter like I expect. I'm just messing around in the driveway right now, so I'm not really "testing". There is a T&T at the local track tomorrow and I think I will go try it out, but I am thinking that the converter might be on the fritz. What kind of symptoms would I look for that would point to the converter? BTW it is a Munsinger and is probably pretty old, but it has always worked beautifully. Thanks, Bill

Bill, clear the motor out in neutral, pump the brakes up as hard as you can, then put it in high gear. Stab the throttle wide open for 3 seconds and note the peak RPM on the tach or just use the play back if you have one. See if your flash stall is what it is supposed to be. If not, the sprag rolled over.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First SS/MA in the TENS! Well, I just got back from T&T and I don't know what is going on with my tranny. I did the converter stall test, third gear, hard on the brakes, full throttle. The trans held fine and the converter flashed to about 5600 RPM, right where I would expect. However, the thing has no first gear. I can drop it into first from neutral and it thumps in fine. But if I try to accelerate it feels like I'm in second or third. It will not pull against the converter like it should in first. It doesn't make any sense, since the only trans element engaged in first is the forward clutch, and if it wasn't holding in first, it sure as hell wouldn't hold in third on the converter at 5600 RPM! If I drive around the pits in first, and shift to second, I feel it shift. Hoever, if I goose it in first the engine revs, but the car doesn't pull forward any harder. If I do the same in second, it still revs, but it DOES pull forward harder. Figure THAT out! My valve body does NOT apply the reverse band in first, so that means that the sprag has to hold the reverse drum. I'm grabbing at straws, but it seems like maybe the sprag is slipping which is why I don't have a good first gear.I bought Shawn Allex's JPT ultralight which I should get next week, so I guess it is going in and we'll see how IT works! ARRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like the low gear clutch pack is not applying Bill. Need to take a pressure reading. The Ultra-Lite a a bad assdude and very fast. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First NHRA & IHRA 289 automatic Superstock Mustang in the TENS 06-99 First SS/MA in the TENS 04-03 IHRA division 5 Superstock Champion Fleet of FoMoCo products including 88 ASC McLaren Mustang #28 The Barry of BarrysGrrl Quote #1: "I never met a magazine mechanic I liked."
