hey guys i havent posted in a longgggg time, about 5 months, been busy with the cougar
well, i pulled the motor out not to long ago and i have a few questions, its a 302. the previous owner said its an 84 motor, but when i bought the valve cover gaskets only the 68 gaskets fit, not th 84 gaskets. well, i pulled the motor apart all day today, i kept the cam in, the heads on, , so all i did was dis assemble most of it. but hers some questions. im on a budget and im not going for serious horse power, im 16 and i just want to kinda build it uip a little. so heres what i have on my list of parts i need, and a few i dont nesesarley need,
water pump ( alluminum one from jegs)
engine gasket kit (inclueds pistons piston rings)
oil pump
fuel pump
pete jackson gear drive or a summit gear drive
cam kit (includes lifters pushrods) AND if i were to get a cam, what type of duration should i get etc... and i dont want anything to bigh where im going to have any problems, i just want somthing mild I NEED HELP IN THIS AREA MAINLY!
next on the list
engine fastenr kit
and thats what i have on my list engine wise, i do need a starter, re buld my carb, i want to get a full msd set up in the future etc... but just help me and givce me your thoughts and advice on the parts listed, and doo steer me in the right direction with the cam!!! thank you very much guys! its greatly appreciated!

351W heads will work on a 302, however they will require different head bolts as the 351's have larger holes, so a stepped bolt is required.

Unless your water pump is broken I don't see the need for an aluminum aftermarket peice.

Re-doing all the gaskets is a good idea, but i don't think you will need a set that comes with piston rings unless you are planning to pull the bottom end apart.

I would stay away from gear drives, a good timing chain will work as good or better and won't annoy you with a horrible whine while driving.

As for the cam a 224 or less duration cam at .050" would be the suggestion of most around here for a mild street motor.

Might i suggest a set of headers if you don't allready have one, and a dual plane intake such as the performer or performer rpm as well, to help take full potential of the bigger cam.

A good rebuild kit for the carb, and a good tune when it's all together, and you should be golden.

I'm sure there will be lots of responses to this question!
I would ditch the gear drive. It won't show you any noticeable gain for what you're building and the NOISE will get real tiring real soon. Get a $39 double roller timing set instead. Save your money.
Do the regular oil pump not a high volume.
Use the old fuel pump til it quits (you're on a budget, and if it ain't broke yet, don't fix it).
Same with the starter, don't spend money on it until its broke. Its simple to change later.
Get the Comp Cams 270S from Alex. I went too mild with mine and now I regret it, now I'm going to go in and change it again. The price will be as good or better than Summitt or Jegs and by going thru Alex you will be supporting a valuable contributor to this forum. Other than heads the cam is going to be one of the biggest factors in how the engine runs.
351 W heads will fit, you just need different head bolts.
I wouldn't use my budget on the water pump, get a regular one from your local parts store. The gain is minor for the cost involved.
The valve cover gaskets should have fit, the bolt patterns and size didn't change from 68 to 84 on a 302.

What intake and carb do you have? 2 barrel or 4 barrel?

Scott

(Hey DUBS, how's that for timing? One minute apart. We must have been thinking and typing the same things at the same time!)

okay I am stupid! Why would one set of valve cover gaskets fit verses another? 84 vs 68 did I miss something?
Thanks,
Bruce

Either the parts dude gave him the wrong gaskets, the wrong gaskets were loaded into the package by the manufacturer or the package was mislabeled.

If your staying with the stock heads (84-302 or 351W) they are only adjustable by changing the pushrod length so the solid cam isn?t a good choice. The 270H or the Performer cam might be better for you unless you pan on changing the rocker studs!

Those gear drives are very annoying. I have a guy three houses over that has one in his 5.0 and it annoys me from my house.

How did the engine run before you tore it down? Did you perform a compression test or anything like that?

Also what kind of trans and gear ratio in the rear are you going to use.

im not sure what gear ratio, its a c4 automatic tranny. no compression test preformed befor brake down, it ran pretty smooth though, but there was some serious calcium build up in the intake manifold and exahast ports, etc... and i had to pull the motor out before i could repair the shocktower so i decided since its out i might as well rebuild it. so the gear drive is out of thequestion, i heard one today in my buddies el camino, and i wanted to slap myself for thinking it sounded good, lol.
