wifes 94 crown vic has a speedo prob. it works sometimes and sometimes it dont. she can be just riding down the road with it not working and all of a sudden it starts working. i think it might have a ghost in it!! does this thing have a cable or is it electronically controlled? it is not digital readout. just the old timey needle and mech odomiter.

Can't tell ya how to fix it, but my Mom's New Yorker did the exact same thing. It had the needle too.

I drove it a couple of times and it just wouldn't move at all. Then sometimes all of a sudden - bang - did what it was 'sposta.

It's electronic Mike.
It may have a bad VSS (vehicle speed sensor)
Do you have a scanner or have access to one.
Usually they will throw a fault code and you can diagnos it better that way.

I just had to change the speed sensor in my 99 super duty it was shifting all crazy and the speedo wouldn't work until 30mph...located on top of the rear pumpkin of all places.

Vss is in the rear end in trucks, but in trans on Crown Vic. If Vss or the circuit is bad there will usually be a check engine light associated with it , along with speedo complaint. May want to check cluster first if no MIL is on. Be sure to disconnect shift indicator cable before pulling cluster!

It plugs in where the speedo cable would go Mike.
