Sounds like you if it is grinding then the syncro is bad, and if it doesnt stay in gear then the slider is bad.

Find a factory service manual for the trans and you should be OK. CHeck EB#$ for a kit as I have bought and sold a TC trans gear set for and 87 my son (fiveOfastback) used to have.

could be a broken fork too, these are aluminum and not tough to break. I've bought a couple that were broken in crashes, not sure if from a person hitting the shifter or the weight of the gear pounding into it.

Years ago I had a 3sp Toploader doing exactly the same thing. I wound up replacing the, syncros, 1-2 slider, AND 2nd gear. By the time I got the car the the teeth ont he gear where the slider engaged were bad. If your will not stay in gear you may be in the same boat?

My 4-speed toploader did the same thing in third and fourth. When coasting, it would just pop out of gear, kind of scary on a steep downhill. I could hold it in gear okay, but still had it rebuilt.
