I have a 70 302 engine to put in my 68 mustang. I am going to use 68 pullies waterpump and other parts. Can i use the 70 c90e timing cover with the 68 stuff. Catalogs for new parts lists new timing covers 68-73, but I'm still not sure. Anyone know?

Thanks, Jim

Welcome to M&M !
You can use the same timing cover.
Just verify the timing pointer location prior to installation.

I'll check around because I know of at least three pointers for the SB Ford and there are probably more. I know 78 is different that a 70 and a 68-289 is different. Which balancer are you using? I'll get some pictures of the three and post it.

My balancer is C8OE A1. I think this is the correct one for a 68 j code. This project is a 68 Mustang GT fastback, J code, C4. The engine and trans that came with the car are a 70 302 2V and 70 C4. I have the correct pullies for the 68 J code.

Thanks, Jim

You using the 70 rad? Outlet is on the wrong side on the 68 rad for the 70 water pump.

From left to right is a 70-351W, 78-302 and a 68-289. As long as you have the correct pointer for the balancer it?s a no brainer. You can always get the crank positioned right and make a make to work with any type of pointer whether its factory or home made.

The 70 Cougar I just parted had the earlier style radiator with the inlet and outlet in the same spots as the 68 small blocks.

It looks like I would need the one on far right - 68 289. I think the 68 289 and 302 are the same, they are listed the same in the NPD catalog.

Thanks for the help.

The covers are the same but the two on the left mount on the passenger side where the one on the right mounts on the driver side.
