NEW IHRA TRACK IN ILLINOIS?Agent 1320 got an email about a proposed new racing facility in Central Illinois in the town of Minonk (population 2200) which is about 125 miles southwest of Chicago. According to the Agent's source the facility would include a 4/10-mile paved oval, a quarter-mile dragstrip and a road course. Sound familiar? The press release had drag racing names like Ron Colson, Cordova track owner Scott Gardner and IHRA's Tom Kreager. The name listed as the developer is one Randy Hellyer. Although he can't attend the official press conference for the announcement, the Agent will be watching the goings on. [3-16-2005]

Alex, this is the same track proposal that was tried at Brimfield Illinois, but the Peoria county board shot it down because of complaining of neigbors. The town of Minonk went to Hellyer after they heard of the problems with the Brimfield site. The new site is located just outside the city of Minonk, the land belongs to a waste management company who has tried to get the ok for a landfill there several times, so from what I hear, most of the people are for the idea of the racetrack, to permanatly end the idea of a landfill!!!! The city of Minonk wants to annex the land from Woodford county for the tax income. So it sounds like this proposal has a VERY GOOD chance of becoming reality!!!!!!!!!!!! Minonk is right off I-39 about half way between LaSalle/Puru and Bloomington/Normal and not too far from Peoria, Best thing for me is it's about 25mins. from my house, probably take me longer to load my car then to drive there!Roger

In the newspaper today it said that during the Minonk city council meeting last night, they announced that the city had bought the 2-year option on the land for the racetracks and assigned it over to Hellyer (the developer) till he has all investors money lined up. They said the next step is the annexation of the land into the city, which an officil said looks like it will have no opposition! They're saying work should be started by summer and racing by 2006! Hope Mother Nature goes by the schedule!Roger

They are trying to put a domed oval track in the next town over from me,I hear it may have a strip in the middle, not sure how they do that...if so I'll be in heaven.I haven't done any racing since Colchester Dragway closed down.------------------ Bob 69 R Code Mach 1 70 Fastback 351C 71 coupe 302 99 F-250 Super Duty 2002 Exploder :) http://community.webshots.com/album/214154666mXNhcr

Congrats guys! Attend meetings, help it out however you can. Especially if opposition comes up.St. Louis used to have two tracks. One in East St. Louis about fifteen miles South East of me, the other in Wentzville fifty miles to my West. Mid America Raceway to our west is being turned into a subdivision now. Funny thing is all the money and developement is moving towards Wentzville.

Well what i have heard is that Papa Norm left the track to his son Derrick. They have already replaced the concrete in the burnout area,They are being consulted on track prep by people from RT66.They fired alot of the existing workers there that didnt care. And i hear they will be hiring an outside person to be Track Manager. He says he has seen the track go downhill and now its time to bring it back. About time! Dennis ------------------ 69 fairlane 351w [email protected] in search of Body parts for 69 fairlane Import Racing is like the SPECIAL OLYMPICS! That is good news, Dennis. I always liked US41 but the track prep and general up keep left alot to be desired the last few years. I remember the last few times I raced there was at night and the pit roads were downright dangerous because most of the pit lights were burned out or just didn't work anymore.Roger
