I just finished doing the t-5 swap on my 65 coupe with a stock 289, and of the 4 wires (2 red 2 black) that connected to the neutral safety switch, the only combination that would start the motor was the 2 reds and one black and the other black by itself. The motor will turn over and start fine, but the motor runs terribly, it will only idle very high and if I try and rev it down it putters and dies. The only way it will run is if its getting a lot of gas not allowing the car to be driven. What happened? I didn't mess with the carb or anything. The spark plugs and wired are a month old and still in perfect shape. Your help is appreciated. Thanks a lot.

You've got something wrong with the wires.
The two 'red' wires from your neutral safety switch are acutally red with a blue stripe, they match the red w/blue stripe wire that should be one of the small pegs on the solenoid. These are the 'start' wires.
The two 'black' wires are actually black with a red stripe and are the back-up light wires.
Its just a guess, but as you are starting the car do the the back-up lights come on? This would happen if your start circuit was feeding power to the lamps.

Either way, it should not cause the car to run poorly. Did the car have an automatic? If so maybe you forgot to plug the vacuum line from the engine to the trans.

Do you have a basic 12v test light to check the circuits?

The car was an auto, so I forgot to put the vacuum line from motor to the trans. Sorry for the dumb questions, but its the line that goes into the intake manifold and will go into my transmission, right? Where in the transmission am I looking to stick the line? thanks a lot for sticking around with me on this one.

Just plug the vacuum line at the intake. The trans does not need a vacuum source.
