I have a 68 stang with mag style wheels that are lug centric. The lug nuts have a shank that goes into the wheel.Basicaly trusting your lug holes and hub studs to do the centering. When you take your wheels/tires to get balanced , they're mounting them on their machine using the large center hole on the wheel as 'true' center, not the 5 lug holes in your wheel in which they are mounted to the hub. I've been trying to iron out a vibration problem I've had for as long as I can remember, and I been considering converting my wheels to hub centric. Basicaly getting some rings made to fit on the hub O.D. that have the I.D. of the wheel center bore and slightly enlarging the 5 lug holes on my wheel, making the rotating assy. 'true' with the hub center it mounts on. Does anyone have any feedback on this? Good idea / bad idea ? couldn't hurt , could it? thanks.

A lot of the mustang styled steel or mag wheels come with instructions that they are to be balanced lug-centric only. I beleive Hunter has a spin balancer for this and their web site can point you to a local shop that will do it for you. A lot easier than fabricating a centering ring. http://www.hunter.com/pub/product/balancer/3551T/ Scott

Whiteknight.Hey you're right, I just called my local tire place and they do offer such a hub adapter for balancing lug centric wheels with the Hunter machine. I've had my tires/wheels balanced many times over the last few years on Hunter machines trying to find my vibration problem. They kept telling me "it's not your wheels or tires, look elsewhere", and now I find out they have such a hub for balancing lug centric wheels. I'm very surprised the tire guys never mentioned or offered to use this adapter before. Hopefully this is the cure to my problems. thanks.

The hub-centric design is a far better way to locate the wheels though. Absolutely the worst is the old Uni-Lug type mags with slotted holes, even worse if they were 4 lug. Combine that with chintzy cast lug nuts and studs so short only four threads on each lug shank attach the rim to the car.... it's a wonder we weren't all killed in the 70's.

That's what I've got (Crager ss). Had um balanced five times, four different shops. Still vibrates at 70 mph. No problem to 110 mph on the chassis dyno. It has to be my front wheels.
