Holley told me that the 700dp was way to big for my setup. They said to use a 600vs,or at most a 600dp. What do you guys think ?------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

Holley tech, "Going by your engine size and max rpm anything bigger than a 600 will hurt you on bottom end but you can do what ever you want to try"Holley, comp cams and the local carb guy all say don't go over a 600vs. And for sure don't use a 700DP. I know what your saying Bob, and agree. I'm just trying to make the best choice. ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

It's about time you spoke up. Always the shy one aren't you. I don't feel the lost low end power. Not when I floor it and the rear end is sliding all over the road. I stiil think the 700dp is the right carb. I think I'm the problem. ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. I ran a 600VS on my 351W for many years, recently upgraded to 700DP. Slapped on right out of box and man I was impressed... Got more impressed after fixing my WOT problem and less impressed with my BFG radial.I have C4 with 3200 stall.

I put my on right out of the box too. It seemed to do ok, only ran for around the block real fast. Off the line there wasn't much of a bog, but rather a lot of spinning. ------------------ oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe 351w C4 Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. I'm running a Holley 750DP on my 351W and have no worries at any end of the power spectrum. Street idle or strip pass it runs fine. I think most carb guys take the conservative approach with selection advice as most fittings are on cars that rarely see a strip. Depends how you jet it - my rule of thumb - jet it bigger til it bogs then back off a size.

I have never actually over carbed any of my small blocks. I have run a 1050 Dominator on my mild 351Ws on the street and track over the years and it always seems to best the 850DP carbs I tried by a tenth in the 60ft times and 2-3MPH. Even when I was in the mid 11s with a low compression stock converter hyd flat tappet with Rhoads lifters. My totally stock'68 Montego other than the Torker 289 intake ran best with a 750DP and would fry the right rear tire yet still was deadly consistent at the track (manytrophies from bracket racing). The 750 vacuum secondary didn't have the "punch" or responsiveness off the line. A 650 worked good too but was 1MPH down in the 1/4 after tuning and wasn't as consistent. The right rear tire with 3.00:1 gears would spin the same amount each time. My 700DP works perfect on my stock low compression 289 in my '68 Falcon wagon while the 800DP was too big. My 10:1 351 in the '65 Fairlane wagon with exhaust manifolds and RV cam absolutly love my 800DP with the stock 1800 stall and 3.40 gears. Makes it like ice when I punch it from a dead stop. Really runs better than with the 700DP and my 650DP is on my '78 Fairmont wagon and with the stock super tight 1200 stall and super tall 2 something rear gears and 225-60-15s still gets rubber. I have tried VS Holleys in place of my DPs but I loose the responsiveness and instant power that a VS just can't give. If you know how to tune a DP carb, you can make what would be considered much too large a carb work wonders making great power and no drivabilty issues at all on your combo. I have run a 1050 Dominator (9375 my favorite carb for small blocks) on mild 302s before and NOT lost any ET 60ft OR MPH over a well tuned 650DP.------------------ Kent '68 Falcon wagon stock 289 '65 Fairlane 500 wagon 10.5:1 351W '78 Fairmont wagon 10.5:1 302 '76 Pinto wagon 392 stroke '01 Focus SE DOHC 2.0L '04 Explorer XLT 4.6 3.73 trac lock What is this FE fixation for which there seems to be no real cure?
