How's this grab ya'll?

From DRO 1320 notes:

KUDOS FOR NHRA AND COMPTON

DRO editor Jeff Burk and NHRA President Tom Compton aren't always on the same page but in this instance Mr. Compton has the complete admiration of Mr. Burk. A couple of years ago Mr. Burk mentioned to Mr. Compton that the stars and bars (rebel flag) design

incorporated into the Division 2 logo was an embarrassment to the sport and had bad connotations in a sport that is so ethnically diverse. NHRA has just updated all seven of the Division logos and the stars and bars no longer appear. A big tip of the Agent's derby. Compton may catch some heat for doing this but he did the right thing and DRO totally supports this action. [3-4-2005]

Hmmm.

Does that logo still have the same connotation it once did?

I think I recall that one of the southern states still flies the rebel flag and gets a lot of flack about it. I haven't heard anything about it for a while so maybe they aren't any more.

I suppose if offends anyone it should be done away with. I'm not real sure what to think about it.

If someone actually involved in the program found the symbol offensive, then by all means, change it. If, on the other hand, as I suspect it was just a symptom of the apollogetic society we've become, then I'm against it. No matter what you do you're not going to please everyone, so why try? Tell 'em to kiss ol' Baldy! Seriuosly, the people who whine the most about injustice or prejudice are the people least affected by it. Awhile back an acquaintance of mine had an altercation with a neighbor over a soccer ball. It seems Ben's kids were playing in their yard and kicked their ball in the neighbor's yard. When they went to retreive the ball, the lout confiscated their ball and verbally abused the kids about trampelling his grass and trespassing. Ben approached him and demanded the return of the ball and suggested a more apropriate way of handling children. The lout (who had 50 pounds on Ben ) cursed him and took a poke at him. Ben proceeded to defend himself vigorously and , of course, the neighbor sued. They had a hearing with a judge (no jury) and his case was going well until Ben's lawyer in reviewing Ben's fine character stated Ben had served his country as a Marine sergeant for 18 years. The black female judge visably stiffened, her smile faded and she immediately found Ben guilty of assault and awarded damages to the lout! Everyone has some preconceived notion and prejudice about something whether it's white socks, driving ricers or sleeping with an ape. Let it go people, you can't please 'em all, so why try? You'll only allienate someone else.
