I may be able to put a set of headers on my car in the near future if the rumors are true about the changes they are making here in British Columbia for the retention of collector plates on your vehicle. So my question is, I have a 289 that is a little warm and ran 14.44 @107 in the 1/4 with stock exhaust manifolds, but since I may be able to put a set of headers on it soon I would like to know which are the best ones to use that will give me the best all around performance and the least amount of trouble for mounting with no ground clearance issues. I also have power steering on the car and am going to keep it, I have about $300.00 - $400.00 CDN to spend on them so what is the best bang for my buck? Also what kind of HP gain could I expect?------------------ JOHN 65 FASTBACK 2+2.....14.44 @ 107mph 1/4 87 TAURUS WAGON 03 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 SHORT BOX Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 65 FASTBACK 2003 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4

You should see 5-10 HP at the wheels if your exhaust is extremely restricted. I always liked Hooker Super Comps but you may be able to go with an all out race header like a Hedman Hustler. You should be able to find a nice used set for what you want to pay. The HP gain is an estimate as you cant possibly guess your exact gain with your combo without dyno time. You will definitely notice a difference. I am no expert by far just giving an opinion of what you will most likely gain with a good exhaust.

I believe Hedman makes a short/midlength header for early mustangs. The tubes are 1-1/2" in diameter and should work much better than your manifolds, and not have any ground clearance issues.http://www.hedman.com It's part number 88400. It's specs can be seen here. Coated headers are also available. http://www.hedman.com/pages/hedders/pass-ford.html#MUST Good Luck! ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220 [This message has been edited by n2oMike (edited 03-03-2005).] [This message has been edited by n2oMike (edited 03-03-2005).]

if you're keeping the P/S you will need the drop bracket (or you can maybe do something yourself if your handy with fabricating) and if your budget is meant to include the drop bracket then your not going to have much money left for the headers. Also depends on whether you want nice headers without coatings, or cheap headers with a coating. the flowtechs (hooker comp copies made under Holley) can be had with a ceramic coating for 200 USD. I dont know of anything that can beat that for price. People I have spoken too say the coating lasts OK. But the super comps get a lot of thumbs up as far as performance goes - with your budget I dont think you will get supercomps with a coating.------------------ '68 coupe, '66 289 C code engine, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm

I just bought the Hedman 1" drop bracket (part# 20120) to put full length headers on a Mustang with power steering for $13 at my local speed shop. I see them at Summit for $19.69. Nice beefy piece and installed on a 66' in about 5 minutes. That is saying a lot because I can screw up a wet dream. That shouldn't take too big a chunk out of your budget.------------------ Jerry Cooper Candy Apple Red, 66' Coupe, Wide Ratio Toploader 9" 3.50 peg leg now, soon to be Traction Loc 302 Block at the Machine shop Soon to be 300+ HP 15" Styled Steel Wheels [This message has been edited by sprcoop (edited 03-03-2005).]

Does anybody else have any other opinions? The ones on here are very good, but I would like as much information as I can get. I really respect the tech info on this site and would like as much as possible before I buy my headers. I can bump up the cost to about $500.00 - $600.00 CDN if needed.------------------ JOHN 65 FASTBACK 2+2.....14.44 @ 107mph 1/4 87 TAURUS WAGON 03 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 SHORT BOX Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 65 FASTBACK 2003 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4

Why is that Alex? Would I still need the drop bracket for the power steering? Please give me as much info as you can. Just about forgot to ask, will there be a marked difference from my stock exhaust manifolds and how much HP could I realistically gain, and how much of a difference will it make on the note of the engine? What kind of price range should I be in with the Tri-Y`s------------------ JOHN 65 FASTBACK 2+2.....14.44 @ 107mph 1/4 87 TAURUS WAGON 03 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 SHORT BOX Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 65 FASTBACK 2003 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4

About 20 HP over stock manifolds which will give you a serious seat in the pants pick up. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First SS/MA in the TENS! Thanks Alex now I just have to wait for the confirmation that they will allow my car to have headers without really affecting the collector plate status of the car. I really want to run a set of headers on this car, i am also assuming that with headers it should vent the exhaust better and reduce some of the engine heat, is this true or just a myth? ------------------ JOHN 65 FASTBACK 2+2.....14.44 @ 107mph 1/4 87 TAURUS WAGON 03 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4 SHORT BOX Member:Vancouver Island Mustang Association M&M #1710 65 FASTBACK 2003 F150 XLT SUPER CREW 4X4

Headers will actually increase the under hood temps, but they dissapate the heat ten times faster than manifolds. You will need good wires if you don't already have them. Overall engine temp shouldn't change.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,'04 &'05 First SS/MA in the TENS!
