What is the requirements on a cage when you run 10's? I don't race that often so I didn't know if you could fabricate a cage that would still work with the back seat and be NHRA legal.

Yes you can.
We have cages and back seats in all three of our cars.
Details are in the NHRA and IHRA rule books.

My car is a coupe. It has bent rear bars that go down through the rear deck.

For NHRA I think a 6 point rollbar is good to 10.00 for full-bodied cars. Is this the case with IHRA too? I'm thinking they may require a cage at 10.99?

After seeing some the video's of cars going down the track upside down etc... I'm thinking of putting one in my 68 coupe.

Did you guys build your own, buy? How much cutting, welding etc.. was necessary. If you bought, were from and how did it fit.

thanks,
don

Last time I checked, IHRA was the same, but I haven't looked at current rule book in a couple of years. NHRA a 6 pt is legal so long as the floor or firewall haven't been altered.

A roll bar....(main hoop....two bars into the trunk area....a cross bar [behind the seats]......and the two door diagonals)......is legal up to a 10 flat....(6.40 in the 1/8th)
IF (as mentioned above....) the firewall and floorboard is unaltered.
However,.....in addition to the rollbar....a five point harness is required....

Hope this helps.......

I just bought a S&W racecars 8-point roll bar for my 68 cougar. Don't have it installed yet but I trial fitted the main hoop and it fits very well. I have seen Alston's in a 68 Mustang and it didn't fit very good. I bought the "pro-street" rear bars that go through the rear package tray for 40 extra so I will still have the back seat. I am going to use Alston's clevises to make the back brace removable and put swing outs on the door bars. I like Alston's swing out's better than S&W.

Billy,

He can get by with only one door bar on the drivers side. Makes it easier for the passengers.

Most tracks aren't very picky at all until you dip into the 9's... then they get all serious.

I went over kill, the only thing my car doesn't have are sill bars. As long as it isn't a street car with getting in and out issues, I like to do way more than the minimum. I will try to post some photos soon of the finnished cage.

You don't even need a 6 point, a J shaped hoop going over your noggin then dropping down to the passenger side sill with a crossbar below your shoulders and one rear brace and a left side door bar is the minimum. That's what i use and the passenger side of the car is very accessible. I can even take the rear seat in and out.
