The way my tranny guy was yammering on in Tagalog today, there are more differences between these two trannies than the splines alone. Could someone spell it out for me in English? We're talking a C4 behind a 351C 2V in a '72 Torino.
Thanks! Simon

Oh yeah, I remember that thread. Thanks! Seems I have the 26-26 spline deal from 1970. It doesn't explain why 26-26 was a one-year deal. Anyone know?
Actually a better resource for the internal differences is this explanation of how to upgrade a pre-1970 C4 to 26 splines:

Just got done reading a little about this subject. I believe, 70 was the only year of a 26 / 26 shaft. Afterword according to what I read it was a 26 /24 shaft.

Dang, now I'm confused I headed off down the workshop where the tranny's already been assembled, so no chance to count the splines on the input. But the output shaft is 28!!!!!
On the servo it says D0AP-7D027-A, but I now learn that doesn't tell me anything much. I need a tag to decode.
What the heck have I got? Sure looks like a C4!

Look for a number on the side of the case above the shift lever. You can also look on the valve body for a number. Don't use the number on the servo, bell housing or tail housing.
The only difference I know of is the input shaft is bigger on a '70 and the modulator is a screw in type. The valve in the modulator hole is a smaller diameter also. Post '70 models have a push in modulator. I see no other differences.

You can pull out the input shaft and count the splines even though it is assembled.

Im not the best guy to help on this, my tranny knowledge is enough to confuse someone else who knows less. But by bro-law does them and we were just looking at that info about c-4s. The way I understood it, we are talking about the input shaft itself. It has 26 splines on the end sticking out into the bellhousing you can see(that goes into the convertor), and 26 splines going into the core of the transmission where all that black art evil stuff happens which makes your car go!!!! I do not believe this 26/26 or 26/24 has anything to do with the output shaft.

Aaaaah! Thanks for bearing with me! I believe Catmando has hit the nail on the head!
In my travels I was thrown by a reference to input and output spline counts. But after reading everything twice, this did NOT refer to the input and output shafts but the "input" and "output" ends of the input shaft!
Will get back when I have a positive ID on this sucker.

Indeed you can Just to clarify for future newbie tranny guys, input/output spline counts refer to input/output splines on the INPUT shaft. The OUTPUT shaft has nothing to do with it. Mine's a '71-on 26-24.
Thanks all.
