I know folks are always saying C4s are fine behind stock, or even built, 351s. I've just scored a 1972 C4 which I'd really like to pop into my 68 w/302. It doesn't need the extra splines yet, but this car is a keeper. Who knows what I'll do to the motor one day?
Which leaves a 1972 (which I will one day sell) with a 351C 4V in need of a tranny. Can I pop the 68's C4 in and be well on the safe side? Or does the 351C 4V really appreciate those extra splines?
No strip work planned here, yet, in either car. Just the usual traffic light burnoffs.
Thanks for any opinions,
Simon

P.S.: I know the simple answer is just to wait for another post-1970 C4, but C4s and even C6s are hard to find here these days - except in cars.
FMXs are plentiful - I have two myself. Perhaps that would be a better option than an early C4?

I my opinion, the 24 spline, early C4 would be fine with a street 351C if you are not going to race it and you are running street tires. A 351C 4V is not know for it's drive train twisting torque anyway. The small input shaft "may" become a problem if you are going to ask more of it.

Thanks Ben! That makes sense that torque monster is going to need a stronger tranny than a high rpm motor. I'd got into the wrong frame of mind by thinking a high performance engine (which the 351C 4V is, comparatively) also needed a tougher tranny.

I'm not saying that a "high performance" cleveland doesn't need a 26 spline C4. I am saying that a "street" type cleveland doesn't HAVE to have it. I'm thinking mostly stock with bolt ons. If you are building up the engine, you should step up the trans too.
