The cam manufacturer claims that a bronze gear is required for the solid roller in the Fastback's 5.0 stroker engine. I've been getting about 2000 miles before changing the gear. This isn't too bad as it usually means two cruising seasons between gears. I just received a new JEGS catalog and see that they are now offering a "Carbon Ultra-Poly Composite" gear for the SBF .467" distributor shaft. They claim that it helps fight against wear issues associated with bronze gears. Anyone with experience or opinions on trying one of these gears? They cost about 3 times as much as a bronze gear.

Ya I'm interested to. I'd buy one if they lasted 4 times as long as a bronze gear. Anyone have any experience with one, even on a chevy or something? I think they're made by comp cams.

I'm running a composite gear in my 408. I've only got about 1000 miles on the engine, so I don't really know much about long term wear. I had the distributor out the other day and the gear still looked new. I'm kinda suprised its holding up. It's a real light piece of plastic, but apparently it's pretty tough. I think I paid around $100 for the gear.
