Does anyone have some info on a 428 Service Blocks? I was told these were used as replacement blocks for FE's through the 70's. The one I am looking at has some traits of a Cobra Jet like 3 ribs internally next to the mains, 4 plugs on the back etc. It also has vertical ribs on the outside near the bottom perpendicular to the pan rail. The cylinder holes are 428 sized bores and it appears to have a Cobra Jet rotating assembly. I don't believe it has ever been apart. It is being sold as a 428 Cobra Jet Service short block. Is this thing a true CJ? What is meant by "service block"? Thanks for any info.------------------ Grippo Racing If nothing else, we look good.

Not sure on your particular find, but a Service Block is an over-the counter factory replacement. Could be a CobraJet replacement. They had to have some way of providing warranty and service on cars that had blowed up motors. Scott

I will post some later... Whiteknight - I guess that was how I should have asked my question. Did they offer a CJ replacement block? I think this might be one. ------------------ Grippo Racing If nothing else, we look good.

Hi, Joe, I have a 428CJ "Service" short block myself. I bought it years ago from a guy who had put it in his 66 F100. Like you said, it uses a later ribbed block with all 428 CJ internals. I popped 1 piston out for a look right after I bought it over 15 years ago. The pistons are cast "428 Super" on the pin boss area,& the crank is a 1UB CJ unit. One minor oddity is the rod nuts. Normally the production CJ rods use the oddball 13/32" rod bolts, which require a 19/32" socket to RE&RE the rod nuts. However, on this service short block, my 19/32" socket was too small to fit over the rod nuts. Instead I had to use a 5/8" socket on the nuts. I realize that many people use the 5/8" socket on the production CJ rod nuts, but it`s a loose fit. However on the service engines rods, the 5/8" socket fits properly. I am under the impression that these 428CJ "service" engines actually used a bored out 391 Truck block, but I can`t say for certain. My service engine is still standard bore & crank dimensions, and is awaiting future use. The guy I bought it from years ago gave me a warrenty tag for the short block, which carried Model number C8OZ-SARS. He was told that it was a "select" Cobra Jet short block, that was dis-assembled & blueprinted, but I find that a bit hard to believe. Still, I think I did OK for $350.00 !! ------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. Thanks for the info Rory - Sounds like we have the same thing. Mine also has a 1UB crank with 428 "super" on the pistons just like my other 428CJ. I think we did pretty decent on the price $1100, not as good as your $350 though. Thanks for all the replies.------------------ Grippo Racing If nothing else, we look good.

I bought 3 of those last year out of a winery in the sonoma valley . All were less than 1400 hours run time, they used them for frost protection. They had never been apart.. Got the complete engine skid on two of them. Paid 750 for the first one and 850 each for the last two. Sold the skids and 2 engines and kept the last one. They are 428s should have a CX on the rear. 428 in the rear water passage on the drivers side. Heads were industrial gave them away with the last engine. Guy had comercial FT trucks that could use them, No performance use different exhaust mounting. min is hibernating in the garage now.------------------ Glen 67 GT 390 65 Galaxie 500 XL 4 Speed It was not a Red Light they gave me a Slow Tree I WAS NOT LATE the Tree was Fast
