Hello, I just changed the oil in my small block toploader tranny, and the old fluid(only 3 months old) came out with an orange/yellow tint, and was extremely foamy. It's just standard 80w/90 gear oil. Is this common? If not, what could be wrong. Still shifted fine. Any help or suggestion would be great. THANKS, Jason.

Jason,Did you drive through any big puddles? Could be water in the tranny. SteveW

Not that I am aware of, but that's kinda what it looked like. When I put the tranny in, I put all new seals, and gaskets? Beats me, any other reasons it would do this.

Probably just Crappy Oil, use Mobil-1 synthetic gear oil

Mobil 1 is too slippery for fast shifting. use Redline MTL That works for me.------------------ Glen 67 GT 390 65 Galaxie 500 XL 4 Speed It was not a Red Light they gave me a Slow Tree I WAS NOT LATE the Tree was Fast

I don't believe MTL is rated as a GL-5 'hypoid' oil that Toploaders are supposed to use. I believe it's a non-hypoid GL-4, and is a bit thin... People use to use it as a replacement for the ATF in T5's before synthetic ATF became popular. Is your transmission noisy with the MTL? Have you driven it a lot, or inspected the unit since running it? I use the Mobil 1 synthetic, but was thinking of experimenting with a more 'dedicated' trans oil made to work with syncronizers, even though the Mobil 1 seems to be doing just fine. ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220

I have discussed this with david kee before and he said if you want your tranny to last don't even think of using mobil 1synthetic in it, it's to slick and it doesn't let the syncros grab the gear and shift, therefore you miss. He said to use a standard gear oil in a 80w-90 weight for general purpose, or if you really shift hard and never drive it in the cold use 85w-140. I'd put valvoline 80w90 in it and forget about it.------------------ 1970 coupe restored with the help of my dad. 306 with 650 dp holley, Weiand Stealth intake, headers, mme custom roller cam, harland sharp roller rockers, kb pistons, 10.3:1 compression ratio, pertonix ignitor 2 with matched coil, lakewood bellhousing, 4-speed toploader, and 3.50 9" locker rear. 1986 f-150, 5.0, factory towing package with original c-6 trans

For drag racing, where the oil rarely gets up to full temperature, regular 80W90 or 85W140 is just too thick. Using this thick oil makes the transmission VERY difficult to shift. The Mobil 1 is much thinner at room temperature, and seems to shift just fine. My toploader has several years of abuse on it, and still has a little life left in it. Those regular dino oils might be just fine for summer cruising or road racing, but they are not ideal for drag racing... unless you drive the car a LONG way to the track to get the oil up to a couple hundred degrees, and keep it moving enough to maintain that temperature. Good Luck! ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220

The transmission is used. I bought if off ebay. I was close enough to go look at it, and not have to pay high shipping costs. I have about 2,000 miles since I put it in my falcon. Does have a little whine to it, but shifts great. The guy I bought it from showed me had it inspected, and showed me the reciept. I ordered David Kee's tailhousing, a hurst shifter. I assembled it, and have been using it daily. It's my daily driver. The oil is cheap, it's the stuff we use at my work that comes in 5 gallon buckets. I don't doubt it could be the problem, but everybody else uses it and has never had any problems. I do drive it very hard.............it's hard not too! THANKS, Jason
