I was wondering if anyone knew why my Alt light stays on. It will go off once I reach about 4,000 RPM and stay off. When I start the car with the charger with the motor running the charger does not show it charging any more with aid of the alt. I was told it was a 60 amp ( but may be 40 ). It was suggested to me that it may be the voltage regulator. The car had a 289 and now has a 351w. If it is the voltage regulator should I get one for the car or motor? I was thinking of changing the alt as pretty much everything is electric vs. mechanical.

It sounds like a faulty voltage regulator, but I would put a meter on the battery and see what the actual rate of charge is while the engine is running at different RPMs.

Thanks, I will try to get to it this weekend. If I need to replace it do I get the one for the car or the motor?

I put a gauge on my starter solenoid ( my battery is in the trunk and being by myself I could not change RPM and read meter).
At idle I show 13. It increases to 15 at 2,500 rpm and tops at 17 above that. I will pretend I understand that...Ok no I won't as carburetion and electrical give me fits and 100% of the time I tried anything my problem usually got worse.
