I want to line up a few things for my project for next Winter. One of the things I want to do, is remove the IRS, and put a solid axle in it. I know several guys running in the low 9s, and 8s with built 8.8 rears, and since I am trying to get the weight down on this, I do not want to put a 9 inch in it.I want to find the car with the narrowest 8.8 axle in it, and see if I can do a mini tub on mine, and use it and fit up to some 12 inch slicks under this. The Fox tbird is narrower than these MN12 Birds, and the Fox Mustangs are narrower than the Fox Birds, what I am wondering, is there any year that are narrower? Maybe another vehicle that has a narrower one? I would like to try to get something from the local yard, and build it up as needed, than buy a complete custom rear axle , at least till I am sure what I need. ------------------ 1993 Tbird 393 stroker, 3500 RPM converter http://members.tccoa.com/393bird/

all 86-93fox body 8.8's are the same width. The rear for an 83-88 t-bird/cougar has the same width housing end to housing end,the axles are longer giving the added track width,I dicovered this when helping my brother install an 8.8 in his 86 t-bird,the mustang rear end seemed narrower than the 7.5 we took out,we measured both and found the housings were the same width. We wound up keeping the mustang axles in and changing to different offset wheel,we ran a 275/60-15 tire in that sucker and it looked small.Steve

Ranger has the pinion offset to the right. If you cut the left of the housing and use a second right side axle you get a very narrow 8.8... maybe too narrow for the TBird. An Explorer with two right sides is 56 1/2" overall width, that's about as narrow as you can use and 31 spline too.

Thet are larger than car axles at the outer end where the wheel bearing rides on the axle (1.620 vs 1.404),that might cause a problem finding a C-clip eliminator that will fit. ------------------ 91 LX 398w street/bracket 6.67@105 1/8 60FT 1.51
