Is that a good buy for my set up or is there something better?

Well.....that all depends.

I'm sorry but I didn't happen to memorize your particular set up.

I have an old style Locker in my 66 Fairlane. Noisy, clangy, bangy thing.

I have a newer style "soft" Locker in my 63 Galaxie. Now and then it'll click but it's much easier to live with.

The Detroit Locker is 1 step below a spool. It is the the best for max strip traction, and still be streetable for limited use. Other non-locker types are better for a street car, but not as good for the strip since they do not provide equal power to both wheels while under power, all the time. The 2 negatives of a locker, are some noise and you have to be carfull feeding power to them on the street while turning.

I am putting one in my car next month.

Is this combo good? Two new axles 31 spline, Detroit locker with 3.89 gears. Please let me know what you think? (351w mild 400 - 450hp)

Should be plenty stout for a street car or a street/strip car. I'd put in more gear, but that's up to you. I don't drive on the street too much and don't mind 4.11s.

3.89 is a good "general purpose" gear except for cross country driving.

Keep in mind that tire diameter will change your effective gear ratio.

Tall/30" tire will be like 3.50

Short/24" tire will be like 4.11

These aren't exacting figures, just the direction things take when you change tires.

Thats my set up...
351W, 5 speed and 3.89 with detroit locker.
Mostly street driven, I wish I had gone with a Traction Lock instead, no problems, just noisy, works well.

My tire size is 18" rim with low pro tires. How high will my rpms be with that?

gearing is a real subjective thing. With those 18" tires you'd probably be the near stock tire height, 25-26". I think anything in the 3.25 to 3.89 range is fine for all around use but if you have an overdrive going to 4.- is OK.
