We are in the early stages of putting a 428CJ into our '66 Fairlane. Anybody ever use Crites Restoration engine swap kits or more specifically their headers? This is a street/strip deal and we want to keep the stick shift. Who builds a super-tuff top-loader or how about any leads on where to find an affordable used Jerico we could have rebuilt. Thanks - more questions later I'm sure.

......by the way, WELCOME TO M&M!! AND, I saw the pics of your blue '70 Stang bracket racer. VERY NICE! Sounds as though you've got your "small-block" really cooking! When you get a minute or two, I'm sure more folks than just me here would like to hear what all you've done to the car to get it into the mid 10s...Have you decided on stepping up to the QA1 shocks yet? I know it's not a 428, but I used a Crites kit to put the 460 in my 66 Fairlane. Generally speaking when you set the engine down in the frame the mounts pretty much self center. With the Crites kit the engine can be up to one inch high one side or the other if you don't pay attention. I just threw a level across the valve covers, centered it up and tightened it down. The headers were okay, but there were some pinholes around the port flanges. I just rewelded everything. Fit was decent. They've been on for 10 years and are fine. I know the 460 and 428 will be different, but his radiator mounting kit didn't leave enough room for a mechanical fan. I widened the opening in the radiator support and moved the radiator forward. I put together a big shaft top loader using wide ratio gears from Dan Williams. That was in '97 so I don't know if he's still around. It has survived many 6 grand holeshots on slicks. ------------------ 63 Galaxie 557" 9.89@137 66 Fairlane 472"11.48@118 60 Esdel 396" not real quick [This message has been edited by BattlestarOne (edited 01-06-2005).]

Joe, good for you for sticking with the manual tranny. If this is gonna be a street/strip car, may I recommend a Viper spec T56? Mcleod has an adapter kit to mate it to the FE and the O/D rocks on the highway. Word of warning, it's a big tranny and some tunnel fab. may be necessary.'60 Starliner 460, T56, 411 posi

There has been a Doug Nash 5pd with bellhousing (doesn't say for what) in a local rag , I think they were asking $900.00 I can look it up again if you like.

Thanks to everyone that replied with info. We are leaning toward Hooker Super Comp headers as we have always had good luck with 'em, but we were curious about the stuff from Crites. We figured they are decent (we have bought some hoods from them in past, great quality). This project is my dad's baby and he is decidedly old school hence the top-loader. That Viper T-56 sounds intriguing though...as does that DNE 5spd.Thanks again guys... Ryan check the wheelstand thread for specs on my Mustang, thanks for the link and the interest.

I used the Hooker Super Comps on my last FE. As always they were a bear to get on but well worth it. My '66 GTA had a 302 in it when I got it. Bought the Crites mounts & sent them back & bought a set of 390 Mustang mounts from a friend. Made a world of difference. A simple bolt through the rubber mount makes it solid too.

What was the reason that you sent the Crites mounts back?

I have always had very good luck with Hooker FE headers. Both fit and performance. For what you would spend on upgrading to a killer top loader, you could almost buy a Jerico.
