I am thinking of pulling out my extra 9inch rearend and installing 430 gears and a spool for the drag strip then reinstalling my 389 trac-Loc when I want to drive it on the street or to shows. Any one else driving around with 430 gears? Did it make a big improvement on your times? Current setup and times: (sorry kind of long)

I've been driving my 408c on the street and the track with 4:30's for years. The one thing I see that would make the biggest improvement on your times would be too ditch the crappy GER convertor.Otherwise, if you are going to set up a dedicated race pumpkin, why not go to a 4.56, or a 4.71 ratio?

More gear isn't going to help if you're still limited with traction...... IF you're truly looking to improve your times, you need to improve getting the HP that you're making to the ground. It's obvious that your chassis isn't getting it there now. What are you doing for traction control? With an average of 2.1's at the 60' mark, you need some help in that dept. However, since this is also used as a street car, there will always be a compromise between street manners vs. straight-line performance. Good Luck! Ryan

Oops, I never saw the pathetic lack of traction as proven by the terrible 60' times. It needs slicks, plain and simple. Even slicks with slapper bars would be a major improvement.

Slicks, a good 8" converter and the 4.30 gear will do WONDERS for that car.Good Luck! ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220

That's a pretty healthy cam for a street/strip setup. Kid Vishus has the right idea. If you want to wake that motor up you're gonna have to get serious with the stall and gears. 2 second 60'times is pretty pitiful for such a nice motor. Are you bogging off the line or just blowing the tires off? ------------------ 1966 Mustang Coupe: Custom glass hood and BIG scoop sits atop a 289 stroked to 331 c.i., Steel crank, rods and girdle, TFS alum. heads, Stealth 8020 intake, Xtreme 268 Solid Roller, Holley 750 HP, long tubes, 4speed, 9" 3.50 posi. 11.50 @ 116 mph (7.33 @ 93 mph)daily driver! Not bustin' on ya here.......just for comparison purposes........My 60 Edsel, about 4000 lbs, 390 with stock Cruise-O, 4.11 traction lock, and 255/70-15 BFG Radial T/As pulls 2.0 60s. You need some bite! As far as street driving with 4.30s I have them in my 63 Galaxie, but I have 30" tires. It's okay for "street" but I wouldn't want to do cross country.

What is your shift point? What kind of tires and traction does the car have now? If you are not spinning it 7500+ rpm, it would run better with a smaller camshaft... at least 10 degrees smaller @ 0.050" You're going to need a converter that stalls at least 5000 rpm to really work right with that huge cam. Even with slicks, it's going to be slow taking off until you get the gears and converter... I've run that same camshaft in a motor that was built very similar, and it worked best shifting about 6800, and using a 5400-5500 convertor. It ran quicker with a looser convertor, but the mph suffered. And getting back to the 60' times, my '93, 4500 lb Lightning with the stock BF Goodrich tires will cut 2 oh 60' times all day.

Wow, I figured it would want quite a bit more rpm than that. Was there anything else holding it back? ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220

What's the car weigh? I would think with that engine combo it should at least be 5mph faster then that. Think that converter is shot, ger has a very bad reputation, most converter companies will work on other companies stuff, most won't even touch anything from ger!!! More gear will defenatly help, but I bet your biggest improvment will be a quality converter. Roger

I used that camshaft in several different motors, and that where it always seemed to work the best. Even in a ported 2v headed motor it seemed to work best right at 7000 rpm. My experiance has been 4v clevelands love a lot of duration. My newest motor is a 402" clevor, and the cam in it is 276/286 @ .050. I plan on shifting it around 6800 also.

Wow. I never expected such a response. I will try and answer all the questions.1. Traction is not a big problem. 2. Car weighs 3480 with driver. 3. Shift point 7000 rpm. 4. It has slapper bars. 5. I race 1/4 mile. Muscle car shootouts -Rockfalls raceway Wednesday night street drags. - Brainerd raceway. Need dot approved tires/exhaust. It looks like I would benifit from a stall change more then any gear change. I rode with my brother in his car and his 2800 stall lauched way harder then my car does and thats with a mild 350 in a 1977 datson 280Z. I knew something was not right the tach says 3800-4000 lauch but the car just is not setting you in the seat till after it gets moving. Suggestions on a stalls. I hear the top two are Coan and JPT after reading so many posts on hear. I think kid hit it on the nose with the stall. I still like to drive it on the street, It dont need to be the fastest car around, but if you could looked at my race video at rock falls last year where I won the 12.5-12.9 shootout. I got beat off the line by everyone. It was great watching the look on their faces when I got them at the end. Gears will come after I get a better stall.

Now you're talkin'. Good choice. I personally us JPT, but I would use Coan too.
