i went to pull my 302 heads apart, and when i compress the spring there is some little piece that goes around the lock, inside the retainer, and it is being quite stubborn, and has put a halt to my cyl. head teardown. fyi im using my old trusty spring compressor, that goes around the head and pushes on the head of the valve and the retainer. HELP...i feel like a moron!! Dan------------------ 73 mustang coupe '77 302 .030 over D0OE 302 heads work in progress

Whack the retainer (not the valve tip) with a hammer before trying to remove the spring. That will break it loose. I think what you're talking about is the inner piece of a factory 2-piece retainer. The keepers get wedged in those pretty tight, take a deepwell socket that just fits on the edge of it and give them a whack with a hammer, probably a 7/16 or a 1/2 inch will do it, lay a piece of wood under the valves so they aren't damaged when you whack them. P.S. one piece retainers are alot better then those for high performance. Roger
