my mustang came with an FMX that is in pretty sad shape, metel shavings all through the trans. my question is should i even mess with rebuilding it?? motor isnt gonna be anything real special, just a stout(i hope) little 302. only thing special about the car will be the 4.10 gears to help the small block get the old boat outta the hole. thanks in advance Dan

If you're not doing a restoration, I'd ditch it for a C4. A C4 is a more efficient and lighter transmission.

I have a FMX tranny in my 79 Ranchero and they will handle up to a stock 351Cleveland engine.

A properly built c4 will handle about as much power as you can throw at it. I ran high 9's with a c4 behind a fairly stout 351 cleveland without any problems. If I knew my chassis would handle the starting line ratio, I would use my c4 behind my 402 inch clevor, but I'm pretty sure it would try and twist the car in two right off the line.
C4's have good aftermarket support now, and FMX's don't. Add that to the weight difference, and the amount of power the fmx absorbs as opposed to the c4, and swapping to a c4 looks like a no brainer.

C-4 is easier to hop up and takes far less horse power to drive.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! PUT THE FMX IN THE CORNER OF THE GARAGE JUST IN CASE YOU EVER NEED A HUGE BOAT ANCHOR AND GO WITH THE C4 AND DON'T LOOK BACK. I,HAD MY BEST ETs with a c4 and we started with an fmx...I asked my tranny builder what he thought about the FMX. Don't waste your money....period!!! Another plus is there is a good chance you could find good used aftermarket parts like a manual valve body and torque converter ------------------ This is FORD COUNTRY, where on a quiet night, you can hear a chevy rusting
