Well i tried to break in the cam today but the motor just wont start. I have fuel and spark and im pretty sure the distributor is not 180 out. The firing order is also correct. The motor pops and sounds like its going to start but it just pops flames out of the carb. We tried retarding the timing and advancing it but that did not work. The only thing i can think of is that the valves are not adusted properly and the intake valve is staying open but i just don't know. What do you guys think? Any help will be appreciated.

Whats the most accurate way to tell that you are not 180 out.

Is your balancer degreed to 30 degrees? If so, bring #1 up to TDC, then move it to 30 degrees. Set the distributor in on #1 on the cap and fire it up.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Is that 30 degrees before top dead center? Also if the distributor is already installed (after i bring #1 to top dead center) can i just pop the cap and see which terminal the rotor is pointing to and make that #1? [This message has been edited by thumpin cat (edited 12-24-2004).]

Yes, BTC. When you are absolutely certain that #1 piston is at TDC, then move the balancer ahead to 30. Then PULL THE DISTRIBUTOR OUT and reinstall it at #1 on the cap in the firing order. If you follow this proceedure, it will start as long as you have fuel and ignition.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! I would only add to what Alex said by saying, be sure it is on the compression stroke. Not the exhaust stroke. That's where the problem lies.------------------ Ben Grabber Green '70 Mach I 351C 4V Robbin Egg Blue '79 Fairmont 408C 4V, best time to date is 10.50 best MPH 127

Do the lifters have to be primed or pumped with oil before you adjust the rocker arms?Im also pretty sure i installed the timing chain correctly (dots were in line).

You should have soaked them in oil, or squirted in the bleed holes. They will pump up in about ten-20 seconds of cranking over also. If you are remotely close on the valve lash, it should still start.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS!
