Just curious what the fatigue life of parts like connecting rods, rod bolts, springs, etc. is? The engine in question has about 550 passes on it (90% 1/8th mile). It is a 351 Windsor that makes about 530-550hp and is shifted at 6500. It has a solid roller and 13.5 compression. The last season was run on alcohol. It runs Eagle SIR rods and a stock crank. The engine was out last winter to check the bearings. They looked good and plastiguaged fine. Not all of the bearings were checked, one main and 2 rods. Would this winter be a good time to replace any major parts? The engine has not had a leak down or compression test lately, but runs as good as ever. I just don't want to leave it together over the winter to have a major problem next season. Your input is greatly appreciated. Matt.

I think if the oil pressure never changed the bottom end should be fine. The things that would bother me is valve spring pressures and condition of the needle bearings in the roller lifters, also timing chain stretch. Roger

Thanks Roger. Last year we replaced the timing chain and double pinned it. It should probably be at least checked again, it was pretty stretched last time, I don't remember how many degrees. The roller lifters are Comp Cams. Are these rebuildable, and if so what does it usually cost. The springs were a major concern and will probably get replaced if they need it or not. The oil pressure is fine. BTW, dad loves the powerglide he got from Chris. He went to Bowling Green a few weeks ago. There were around 160 cars in his class and he made it to the final four. Matt.

Have the crank checked for cracks. Rest of the parts should be fine.

Matt, was the car quicker or slower with the glide, sounds like it's more consistant! Chris sold the Zepher to guy near Cordova, so we may see it again in the future. I'm sure the Comp cam lifters can be rebuilt, not sure who does it though, Kid V. had some rebuilt seems like he said it was about half the price of new. They might be fine, but I'd sure check them, they sure can cause alot of damage if one comes apart, well worth the price of a pair of intake gaskets to check. Roger

I have had a couple of sets of Lunati's rebuilt. It's been a couple of years, but the last time I had it done it seems it was around $125. New they cost around $335.

Comp has a exchange R&R program for their roller lifters and they definatly need to be rebuilt. I used to exchange mine every 50 runs. Crank should be checked for cracks as advised. Thank you men for the posts. Roger, the car ran exactly the same. I don't know what it is with that car. When we changed gears from 4.56 to 5.14 to 4.11 it all was within .05 seconds. When he went to the glide he started with the 4.11 that he normally runs and it ran exactly the same. He put some 5.00 in it to try and it ran .05 quicker with the glide. He has since put 4.56 back in and it still runs the same. The car runs consistant low 6.60's with a best of 6.55. I don't even think the short times have changed. He does think that it is more consistant. He lost in the semifinals at Bowling Green with a .499 red light (.001 red). Matt.

On the subject of valve spring pressures, does anyone have, or used one of those Moroso valve seat pressure testers? Says accurate within 3% wondering if it would be worth it to get one? Roger

I talked dad into checking the crank (like everyone advised) for cracks. Guess what, the number one rod journal had a crack in it. Thank you guys for the tip. The crank shop said they could try to grind it out, but they didn't think it would come out. We have several stock Windsor cranks around. What are the odds of a stock one doing this again? This one was uncut. How do the Scat 9000 cranks hold up? Any suggestions? Thanks again, Matt.

I've got a Scat 9000 series crank in my BBF. 4.500" stroke. Makes a 557. Mine is in the 900hp range based on weight/mph at the track. It has 450+ passes on it. Shift at 6800-7000. I'm doing a freshen-up right now. I had the crank magnafluxed last week. It passed with no cracks found and no problems. Also, in regards to to the roller lifter rebuild: I called Comp Cams today to check on getting mine rebuilt. It runs $11 per lifter. $176 per set. A new set is right at $300 David Cole ------------------ 557 BBF Powered, alcohol injected rear engine dragster. 4.90 @ 143 1/8 mile. 1.09 60'. I've got to be crazy to drive this thing.

Fordeiser, I have one of those spring checkers I use to see if any spring is totaly smoked. When I use it my arm gets to shaking like a dog trying to pass a peach seed. If your seat pressures are not to high it may be good for you. Mark J
