HEy guys, a while ago we were talking about the 351M/400 having a SBF bolt pattern. Right after that I got a copy of my Legendary Ford magazine (check it out if you don't alreay subscribe) and they featured the Cleavland motors. They mad mention of the 351M/400 and said they were fairly decent motors but they could not be reved very high because of the large 3" main bearings. Don't the 351W also have the same sized main bearings? If so does the W have limitations on RPM's like the M. Do the M's have a limitation because of the main bearing size?Sort of confused on this so if some one could clear this up for me. I'm considering a stroked 351W for my wagon, so I'm wondering about the W's limitations. Also under consideration is a 347 based 302. B-loose

IIRC, the early Windsor strokers were made using 400 cranks since they both had 3" mains (and the same bore centers). I would assume that any problems claimed for 3" mains would apply to both engines (bearing speed and friction????). However, it probably isn't an issue for street engines and probably makes for a pretty strong bottom end.------------------ Bernie Frank 66 Fastback restomod (12.8 @ 112mph) 85 GT (preserved) 2000 SVT CONTOUR

351m/400m have a bell housing bolt patern of a 460 but the crank will fit the 351 windsor and so does the cleveland crank but thats about it the use those cranks to make 104 410 strokers out of windsor blocks. Hope this helps. Discloser I am not no expert in anyway shape or form just a gearhead is all. Bruce

There's alot of guys out there still running 3" mains in their windsors and spinning them. Personally I ran my 351 for years shifting at 7200 and never had a problem. Run about .003 clearance, run oil restrictors and a good oil pump and you won't have any problems.I think until you start spinning them 8 grand or something, 3" mains are not a problem. ------------------ '68 mustang 351 clevor- 10.92@124 '67 Stang, 351W -11.18@118 '69 351C Torino-14.90@100 '78 Pickup 351W-15.56@88 '79 Pickup 460 ET=??

Cool I was thinking maybe 6000, maybe even a little less. I had heard about the 400's not likeing being reved because of the main size before. When I relized the W had the same main dimensions I was concerned. When I get closer to building a motor I'll have to ask some more specifics about the oiling system. For now I have lots of work before I get to the point of putting a motor together. But if I run across a 351W block for a good price I'll likely snap it up.Thanks, B-loose
