I have 13" brakes on my Saleen. I'm trying to replace the pads and I can't get the hex on the back of the caliper loose for the life of me. I put a 10mm allen wrench on the back of it, but I can't bust is loose. I even put vise grips on the wrench and twisted it in the grips. Is there a special tool for this job, or some trick I'm missing?Damn! George is getting frustrated!!!

All right, I got it off. Turned out I was trying to back out the fittings that hold the two caliper sides together. I finally got my head on straight and got the right bolts out (they weren't much easier). Anyway, now I have a dilemma (I know you guys love those). The reason I tore them down was because they were squeeking under light braking, which I assumed was the squeeler. I took some pics of what I found and I'm hoping Steve will post them here for me. The pads don't look to me like they need to be replaced. There's probably 1/2" or more of pad left. Now I'm confused as to what would be making the squeeking. It's a 2001 Saleen and only has 10k miles on it. Beings as it has the upgraded 13" brakes on it, and it is a Saleen, I would assume that the pads would be high performance and thus pretty soft. I wouldn't expect a metallic squeeking. I haven't taken the other side off as I thought the squeeking was coming from the passenger side, and that would be worst case. Anyone have any idea what might be going on here? I had Sandy pump the brakes and the pistons are all popping out. Help!!

George,Squeeling disc brakes are usually caused by the pads vibrating on the caliper's piston. Get some anti-squeel goop and coat the back of the discs. Also take a file and file the top edges of the friction material at a 45 degree angle to remove burrs. That will help too. Good luck. SteveW

Here are the pics Dave sent me: Dave, if those are racing disc pads, they will squeal when they are cold, and I don't think there's anything that can be done except for to swap them for semimetallic pads if they are available. You might want to contact Saleen and see exactly what you have.

Thanks guys! SteveW, I did what you suggested. There was a fair amount of grit between the pistons and the pad backs which I cleaned all out and put some anti-squeel (seems there was some there previously which I cleaned off). I put it all back together and it's better. Not gone, but better. It's also interesting that the only time they squeel is when you lightly hit the brakes while slowly rolling. If you nail them or press harder, there's no issues.I talked to a guy from PerformanceAutoSports.com the other day about this (great outfit by the way) and he was saying that this is normal for these cars. Those brakes (4 piston! ) are made for racing, not slow rolling stops. He said there was a chance that they could have a little bit of glaze on them. He said if I were to do triple digits and slam on the brakes, I'd clean the glaze off them. Now see, that's a line I never thought of before! See officer, I was just cleaning my brakes! LOL! Anyway, bottom line is I'm just going to have to brake harder, or live with it! At least I know nothing is wrong!

You should check this out http://www.gwrauto.com/silencer/it's an excellent product and has stopped any brake squeal problem I have ever encountered, especially high performance applications.

What do they want for that stuff? Sounds intruiging, but the fact that they're not giving any prices has me worried!
