If your car runs 10 second or slower ET's you merely need to become an NHRA Member, apply for a SS competition number. It costs $25 for one year.If you are going 9.99 or quicker you must get a comprtition license. That involves getting an FAA physical and getting three comp liscensed drivers to watch you make three runs and sign your form. The three runs are progressively quicker and the last one has to be representative of your class. Forms and information are on the NHRA website. http://www.nhra.com/ click on the word "Competition" on the little blue bar at the top of the page. John

Actually, in Super Stock, you may need a Competition license even if you are nowhere near the 9`s. The NHRA rulebook spells out which classes of S/S require the Competition license, but basically, if your classes record is, or has been in the 9`s, then all cars in that class need the Comp. license. For example, there is a local guy with a SS/IA 70 Cougar, 428CJ, that so far has barely gotten into the 10`s, but he had to do the 6 passes needed to get his Comp. license. The SS/IA index is only 11.00, but at this time, any car in I or above is required to hold the Comp. license. The same rules apply for other safety related issues as well. On my M/S Mustang, which has a 13.15 index, & I have only ran a best of 12.52 (so far!), my car has to have a rollbar. The record has been in the high 11`s.Same deal with my car needing to run a scattershield & SFI clutch.I could run 1/2 second quicker in brackets, & not need one, but in Stock, I do. Funny thing is, in Stock, you are not required to wear a fire jacket, even in a high 9 second A/S-A/SA car, but if you run the same car in ET brackets, once you hit the 11`s, it becomes mandatory.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. I have a traditional NHRA and IHRA Competition License. I earned it. I was licensed in 1982 and have kept it continuously renewed since. I have signed for many drivers myself over the years. I can't even remember all 3 of the guys who signed mine originally. I know that Joe Colvert was one and Tony Christian was another. I believe that Freddie Garcia was the third. I was originally licensed at Byron. IHRA allows you to grandfather in if you have a current NHRA license. You just need to submit copies. NHRA does not extend the same courtesy.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Well, I guess a lot of people don't know about that one. In 1980 I bought a Modified Eliminator 66 Mustang from Gary Long and Mike Edwards. About the time I retired MM from it's first stint as a SS car. It had a Jack Rousched Boss 294 de-stroker. By the time I got it competitive in late 1981, ME was history. Sooooooooooooooooo over the winter I put a PG in it, added some giggle juice and went Sewer Gas racing with it. I ran with the Midwest Pro Gas association for a couple of summers before the electronics and throttle stops took over.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Cool Alex, I used to love Modified. We had quite a few regulars at the "old" Mission Raceway in the mid -late 70`s that ran in Modified, including a Boss 302 powered B/SM Maverick. I assume witha your Mustang, the Boss 302 heads would have also put you in B/SM, right? Actually, one of the best known Ford Modified cars at the time, the Corn & Thompson Boss 302 Maverick (D/MP) was bought by a local racer in the mid 70`s. The dumb thing was, they sold the Boss engine to a local Comp racer (57 Tbird D/A), & then tried to run H/MP with a 300 6 cylinder. Kinda strange to buy a "killer" car, & then radically alter it. One of our local stick series racers is still running the same 70 Maverick 300 6 & Nash 5 speed setup that he also ran in H/MP, since 1973. No shortage of high winding small blocks with heavy flywheels in those days! Alex, do you have any pics of the Modified car you could post? Also, do you remember a Modified Fairmont that I believe, ran in Div.3? It was green, and driven by Ron Baker. ------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. I'll dig up some pics tomorrow Rory. It was a B/SM car with a Nash 5 speed. It had a slick shifted top loader originally when I bought it, but the gear splits sucked. The 3.25 low in the Nash really woke it up. I first met Bob Corn when he had a 66 Mustang with a Boss 289 that ran in D/MP and E/MP. He was a FoMoCo engineer. I learned a lot of inside dope from him. I remember Baker too. We had a lot of high winding stick shifter MP cars in division 3. You keep forgeting that I was a stick man most of my life. Parts breakage and $$$$$$$$$ made me go pink. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Good Stories Alex & Rory.. It would be fun to hear some history of M&M members that have been racing for a few years.. There's been a lot of color & changes in drag racing over the last 40 years.. I just saw where they are replacing Chistmas Tree Light with the new Halogens because they light faster,, which should change reaction times & drivers reactions.. ------------------ Don 6T6 Fastback 331 STROKER, T-5 Royal Blue Metallic w/Red-Blue Ghost Flames http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/BigD.html First Time out.. 13.384 sec @ 103.388 mph [This message has been edited by Big D (edited 12-07-2004).]

I've seen this done so many times it's become predictable. Most of the time the new owner is correcting things the old owner "did wrong". The car always slows down. I think the naturally asperated classes in NMRA and FFW are pretty close to the old Super Modified class runoffs except there are no Chevies. My health seems to be getting better so maybe I will get the car running next year. Waiting patiently to enjoy your pictures Alex. John

A bit off the subject, I know but all this stickshift talk.....There's a regional group called the Ozark Mountain Super Shifters that have points races all over our part of the country. They are indeed fun to watch. One of them from about 25 miles from here has a real 64 Fairlane Hi-Po car that he bought new. Its now raced with really high RPM little motors, usually around 310 inches. With a Liberty 5 speed it sounds like the world is coming to an end. Launches are on the 10,200 chip and shifts are 9400! Rumor has it he's building an aluminun block motor for next year. Also theres a Maverick with a Cleveland that does HUGE wheelstands. Our web site is: www.bcsupershifter.com Some nice photo`s in the Action photo`s section, as well as some info on several of the race cars, in the members pages. This year, 4 of the top 5 points earners were Fords! We have everything from several mid 8 second cars (368in Yates head 66 Mustang coupe,540in Lenco 70 Nova,as well as a couple of Mopars, including a 8.80 SS/A 68 Hemi Cuda), to 9,10, 11, down to 13 second street cars. Dad V... those guys are quite alright I'd love to dump the clutch at 10,200... i'm afraid my engines innards wouldn't like it. Alex mentions early Pro Gas... that's back when it was cool before the electronic crap ruined it. I started to build my 67 Mustang for that back then, but with my slow work pace and the changes in the class it's still all apart.

Alex, any chance you may still have some Nash 5 speed stuff laying around? I still have a T5 in my 85 mustang Stocker right now, but I do have a Nash 4+1 Drag race 5speed I`d like to try, but unfortunatly, it has a Chevy input & bearing retainer. I think I`ll park the Fairmont for next season, & concentrate on the Mustang, so I could "borrow" the Fairmonts Jerico, but that would require re gearing the trans. Ideally, I`d like to try both, to see if the extra gear in the Nash is worth anything over the Jericos 4 gears. I doubt it, but ya never know unless ya try!------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed.
