I bought a 1979 sbf 302,to build to go into a 1967 mustang coupe. I plan to race this next year on 1/8 mile drag. I have been out of racing for about`15 years. so I don't really know how to build these newer motor to do what I like to do. I would like the first year to reach about 7.5 in the 1/8. how would you build this. thanks

Im answering cuz nobody else did yet. There are others out there that will help you more for sure. Depending on the cash you want to spend, but I would definately look at heads first. If you have the money, aluminum, but if not you can score for very little money some GT-40 or GT-40p heads or Dart. (iron) Way better than the smoggers on that motor. I cannot convert 1/8 to 1/4 times, so I don't know how much power you need for your goal.

Shouldn't be that hard, I ran a 7.40 in my car with a small hydraulic roller cam in a 347 stroker. I would say a well built 306 with a decent flowing set of aluminum heads and a solid lift cam will get you there!!

Well if you want to go the cheapest route possible you can go with a set of 1979 351 Windsor 4 Barrel heads and intake from any local salvage yard just make sure that the donor parts worked when they came in.

These parts are interchangeable from 351W to 302W and go with the Nine Inch Rear End Differential from a 1979 Lincoln Town cars and Continentals w/ 460 big block in it because they came with a Nodular Iron Front Cover like they use in drag racing and Quad-Linked Suspension Axel Housing and Rear Disk Brakes and 31 Spline Axles which the Axel Housing and Axles can be shortened to fit your desired length and the cool thing about this Nine Inch Rear is that you can switch to the Ford Explorer Rear Disk Brakes Setup which to my knowledge has not had any problems like the Lincoln Town cars and Continentals did.

hey, i know a guy with a 67 coupe (fully loaded) that just got into the 7.40's with a 302 on pump gas (hydraulic cam) without an adder. i dont know if you are wanting to run those numbers with pump gas compression and no adder. if your gonna jack the compression way up or run nitrous then your goal will be a cake walk. but if you wanna run it like i got mine the 351w heads aint gonna cut it without very decent port work. matter of fact, i wouldnt look at gt40p's or darts either. if your gonna just race it, strip it down and build a race only motor then 7.50's will be easy. maybe more info is needed. i could build you a cheap durable 302 with stock long block (duh) forged pistons, solid cam, and you could spray it into the mid 7's. with nitrous, the heads aint as important because you are cheating so you could save money there and spent it trying to get the chasis to hook and on the trans.

------------------
coupe, 306, 4 speed, 4.11's. pump gas, n/a street car. best so far is 7.48 (1/8 mile) at 93mph with 1.64 60ft. 11.80 at 113 on greased 1/4 track.

My $1500 302 with a few up grades (in your budget) will fill the bill.

Sorry Everett, but we can't make it.
We have some family commitments this weekend.
Besides, all of our junk is put up for the winter.
Good luck and maybe tell Red and Jessie to keep me posted via cell phone.

Xaeubanks: Ahh, Ft. Hood. Spent the late 80's into the early 90's there. Lovely dust bowl. They had a dragstrip on post when I was there, next to the railroad tracks in the industrial area, cannot remember the name of the road, but it is by the main gate. They then moved it to North Ft. Hood at Longhorn airstrip. That was cool because of no return roads. You raced all the way down the track / airstrip, got to play NASCAR around the taxi turn around and came back the wrong way down the track!!! They closed it during Desert Storm. Is it back up???? What unit you with?

I'm not in now got out in 1988, I work on track vehicles. But the Army don't allow any racing on post any more. There is a strip down at Temple. But In Jan 2005 I will be back at home. And I going to start building my 302 up. I pick up a holley 870cfm today at a swap meet. Don't know if I can use on this engine, but may be able to use on the 393 I going to build next year. But will look at any suggests you have. Thank you
