I was just looking through the Oct. 1993 Super Ford magazine. There is a Cleveland intake shootout. The test engine is a 3.7" stroked stock Cleveland crank with 5.7" Chevy rods and TRW L2348 dome pistons. The compression came out to 13.7. I was just wondering if any of you have ran this combination or a similar one with the short rods? How much does it usually run to stroke the crank and widen the rod journals? I Have a set of those pistons and Chevy rods are pretty reasonable. I know there are far better combinations out there, but curiosity is getting the best of me. Thanks for the input. Matt.

I always thought that combo they ran for that test was a really poor one.
Those pistons are really heavy, and add that to the really poor rod/stroke ratio and you end up with a motor like they had; one that doesn't produce near the power it should. I have ran 2v headed 357 inch motors with 11-1 compression, a lot less camshaft and made more power than they did with their stroker.
Plus, IMHO, the heavy pistons and poor rod/stroke ratio is a major factor in splitting cylinder walls. If you put a longer rod in it, that will improve the rod angle into the cylinder, plus it will allow a much lighter piston to be used.

I agree.

With those heavy pistons and short rods, I'd be gritting my teeth every time the tach needle got to 6,000. Too much cylinder wall pressure.

My 377 has 6.125 inch rods and light pistons. That works real well, but admittiedly isn't cheap. It sees about 7400 in the traps on the quarter mile. I run it pretty conservatively. I'm sure the numbers would be better with more RPM, but I'm going fast enought for me.
