I have just got an aluminium Cleveland block in a job lot of parts I bought and I don't know quite what it is. I suspect it maybe a Fontana but there are no ID marks that I can see. It has 4 bolt mains on first 4 positions, screw in core plugs and extra bolt bosses above and below the usual 10 bolts, for 6 per bore. These extra holes are smaller than normal. Bore size is about 4.10 and deck height seems to be stock Cleveland. It has been damaged and repaired so I don't yet know if it is usable but for now I just want to know what I've got. Any ideas?
Cheers, Martin.

There are three possibilities for aluminum 9.2" deck blocks with 2.75"
Cleveland mains. The first is a true copy of the 351C block in aluminum
that was made by Ford back in the 1970's, along with aluminum 4V heads.
The second is the Fontana block which is a hybrid 351C/351W block. The
third possibility is a 9.2" deck version of the Ford Motorsport, Dart,
or World Products blocks. These are essentially 351W-type blocks with
Cleveland mains. Does a 351C or 351W oil pan bolt up to the block?
Does it take a Cleveland, Windsor, or hybrid front cover? That will help
me narrow it down some.

My Fontana block has 4 bolt mains on all 5 mains with 2, 3, and 4 being
splayed and 1 and 5 vertical. It does have screw-in core plugs. It also
has three stiffening ribs running across the valley and the word HYPO
on the front. I can send pictures if you provide me an email address.

The only block with extra head bolt holes that I know of is the World
Products block but these are quite new and I'm not even sure the aluminum
version is available yet. Can you get some digital pictures?

Hey Dan,thanks for your reply, most informative. More info for you to help ID this thing:
All 4 main caps (4 bolt) are vertical, NOT splayed.
Front cover looks like stock Cleveland.
Can't check sump fit, have no spares right now but will have a look.
The block is old (PO had it 20+ years) so WP option looks doubtfull!
No strengthening ribs across the lifter valley.
Will try to take pics sometime soon but difficult just now. Thanks again for helping.
Cheers, Martin.

That sure sounds like an early Ford piece. I believe the Ford aluminum
blocks had an SK prefix part number. You might look for that or possibly
an XE on the block.
