Sorry to spam the racing forum but this is where the action is and I need a quick answer. My sister has a '99 Mercury Sable with 3.0L V6. The heater was working erratically, so she checked the coolant level and it was low. She put in some of the yellow "universally compatible" coolant. The coolant that was in there previously appears to red/brown, probably the Dex-Cool stuff? Is that what should be in there or do I need to flush and re-fill with the green ethelene-glycol?

Thanks,
Dan Jones

I would drain/flush and refill with regular. Regardless of whether the new coolant was "universal" that Dex Cool stuff is crap. I've seen it cause lot's of problems. If the coolant ever gets a little low with that stuff it makes a rust colored sludge that will stop up everything.

The local GM dealer has even stopped using it even though it's from the factory in GM cars. Too many warranty issures with cooling systems. Heater cores, radiators, water pumps, even head gaskets blamed on it.

thats red brown coolant is rust water. flush wont help those engines. ford has a iron cleaner solution that is part of the TSB/recall for the 3.0 taurus brown coolant problems. Them 3.0's are know to crack heads when overheated and the valve seats get beat out on a regualr basis. And only green coolant, never mix in yellow, gold or orange coolant.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to track down the TSB/recall info.
