I was reading on a FE Forum that the Edelbrock Performer is one of the worst performance intakes you can get for the FE engine. I have a basically stock (I guess) 68 GT engine with forged 30 over pistons getting me 10.5 to 1 compression, higher lift but stock neighborhood duration cam, but I did gasket match the ports though. While doing that I took some humps out of the exhaust port that a friend of mine said should also go. Been reading that a gasket match S-code intake will perform as well if not better than a Performer. I think the one I have is a performer FE and I have also seen Performer 390 intakes. I saw a guy with a later 68 with a C8AE-9425F casting and would like to find out if that is correct or if C7AE-9425-E will work. My car was built on Dec 27th of 1967. This also is coincidentally one year to the day of my birthday, which is kind of cool.------------------ Ed S. 68 S-code FB GT 4spd(now C6)/3.25 PS PDB 68 J-code(now 289) Cp Sprint"B" C4/3L00-9" PDB PS AC 99 F150 XLT Ext/cab, 4X4, 5.4L, 3L55

Changing back will only gain you about 70 pounds of weight on the nose of the car. The Performer is a bit lacking over 6K RPM. Otherwise, it is superior to a stock factory flat FE iron intake. How much higher do you take your 390?------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! If you're running the stock exhaust manifolds, I would think the Performer should be fine. The exhaust is the real cork so going to the RPM, F427, BT, PI, etc probably won't make much difference. Alex is right, why add back all that extra weight?

I'm only shifting at about 5500 so I guess I'm ok then. I'll just throw the S-code back in the corner just in case.

No snow here but the local hills are white. LACR is close but still haven't run the car. Seems like there is always one more thing to work on. Hopefully early next year.

Factory FE intake make nice small boat anchors weighing in at 70lbs. Keep the performer Ed!

I had a 750 carb with headers but put the stock manifolds back on and down sized to a 600 Carb. I switched back because I was tired of blown out gaskets with the cheap headers. In three years I think I replaced close to 5 sets of gaskets and not once since I switched back. Cam is a Crane Cams #343801 with an intake lift of .548" 278 duration and exhaust being .580" 290 duration. ------------------ Ed S. 68 S-code FB GT 4spd(now C6)/3.25 PS PDB 68 J-code(now 289) Cp Sprint"B" C4/3L00-9" PDB PS AC 99 F150 XLT Ext/cab, 4X4, 5.4L, 3L55

The stock intake and exhaust is a real cork in those engines. Maybe 60 to 80 hp worth with that cam. The Performer is hardly any better than the stock iron piece but weight reduction helps. Even at 2000 RPM i think the Performer RPM will make a gain over it. I lug mine down to idle in high gear and rarely go over 3000 in normal driving. Headers alone are probably worth 40 to 50hp over GT exhaust manifolds. You might try copper header gaskets but i had good gasket life by simply making sure the header flange was flat. Try holding a header up to a flat surface and checking that it contacts fairly evenly around the ports. Use a disc grinder to level down high spots.

I agree with Tomp. That 390 needs some headers.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Another trick I use with headers is to cut the flange in between the cylinders so each pipe is sealing individually to the port and can't be affected by a warp in the flange from end to end. Some headers are not made this way and just have individual pipes already. On my CJ heads I used to put in all 16 bolts in each header as well.------------------ 1968 mustang j-code sprint.13.69@101 306cu.in, stock ported heads, weiand exellerator,650 holley DP,hedman hedders, comp 292 Magnum cam,4-speed,8 inch 4.11 detroit locker http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/MembersPics/mustangboy.html
