Ok........I have taken the 68 for a drive....**** its good to be back in the saddle

It needs some fine tuning bit its good enought to drive/thrash around in.

The verdict.......it seems to have better low down throttle response and a bit more two stroke like(due to smaller cam and tighter lsa 238/[email protected] 108, 106 320/334 lift at cam)

Not as much torque(lack of webers), nice choppy idle(family/child friendly I hope)It still spins the treads in second at about 30mph but it just lacking that something.

No where near as loud, cannot cruise in 5th at 35mph any more it gets the kangaroo hop happening(maybe due to carb tuning but I am thinking the webers smooth out the cam and the old 650dp doesn't)

I couldn't wind it up too much around the local streets so I will have to wait until I can get onto a freeway on ramp and find out where it stops making power......should be interesting once I get the carb fine tuned.

I am running an alloy open 1 inch spacer but I will be changing to a 1inch 4 hole plastic type next week.

Its good to have it driving again but I am not overly excited about its performance........but you have to do what you have to do!

Why did you dump the Webers?
I know tuning is a real PITA, but they work very well if set up by someone who knows how.
Is your cam solid or hydraulic?
If it's a hydraulic, it's pretty lumpy for a street oriented car.
Try a 4 hole spacer.
I assume you have a Victor Jr intake?
If you still feel the need for more low end try a dual plane line the Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap. You will sacrifice some top end for improved low end.
What is you manifold vacuum at idle?
What power valve do you have?
If the power valve is not properly matched to the vacuum at idle, it can open (due to low vacuum) and cause fuel to drip from the boosters, making the engine run like crap.

I dumped the webers for a few reasons.....
1st was so I could by a track car I dont have to worry about
2nd..Fuel usage

It is a solid flat tappet, and the carb has not been touched it has all factory jets etc
I am running a rpm air gap.
I have no idea what the vacuum at idle is.

I have taken the 68 to have the hot lash done(yes I am a slacker) and on the way I gave it a bit of a wind up, before I new it I had hit the rev limiter 6700rpm.Geez I must have installed the cam a few degree's advanced

It definately revs up high but the torque difference is noticable.

It is hard to tell when the power drops off with this set up. With the old set up you could feel the slight power drop at 6200rpm then it was time to change.

It seems I am warming to the new set up..slowly!

Good breathing strokers need better induction than a 289-302. I noticed a definate improvement in midrange torque on my 331 when I changed to a 750 DP and a 2" 4 hole spacer. I also use a Weiand Stealth intake which is a bit larger than a RPM. The Holley 770 Street Avenger was also an improvement over the 650DP at the strip.

I went and picked up the car today and on the way home at a set of lights the oil pressure dropped to 40psi at idle, the normal idle pressure is about 60psi.
When I got home I lifted the hood to see a haze/smokey look from both rocker cover breathers(more from the right than the left)
I turned it off and came back 20mins later and restarted it ,no smoke haze 60psi idle then gauage starts to fall and rise quickly over and over.

Engine temp normal and 80psi at cruise speed

Any takers for what may be wrong?

So far I have pulled 6 plugs all seem normal so far

40 psi at idle is still really good pressure....
