I am ready to remove the manual steering box in my 65 falcon. I know I will need a pitman arm puller and a steering wheel puller. How do I go about removing the box, What steps do I have to take? How long of a job is it? I wan't to have the box rebuilt so that it is tight again, I have to remove the box and then ship it away for the rebuild. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks once again.

Is the engine still in the car? Headers or exhaust manifolds? Most times you can get away without a pitman arm puller.More after you answer questions. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Oops, forgot about this one. I am pretty sure that you will need to remove the driver side header. Even with the shorty. You can try just disconnecting the exhaust pipe first, then unbolting the motor mount. Disconnect the center link on both sides and drivers side outer tie rod end. You will need to remove the idler arm. Jack up the engine and see how much clearance you have. You do not have to remove the pitman arm from the steering gear unit. Inside the car, you will need to remove the steering wheel, take out the turn signal mechanisim, shifter collar, unbolt the column from the dash, then carefully slide the column up and out while taking caution not to damage the wiring harness. You can then upbolt the gear box and wiggle it out.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! It's actually easier than you might think. When I changed mine years ago I was not sure if I could actually get it out with the motor in. If memory serves me it only took about 5 hours (out and in) in my driveway. I was amazed how easy it actually was.Jeff

Memory is getting a bit foggy, that was back about 1985?Drivers side header Pitman end Steering wheel Steering wheel tube (2 nuts, disconnect the wiring harness and it slides out) Mounting bolts for the steering box. Most difficult: header, pitman end, steering wheel. It's easier than you might think because the steering tube hole is fairly large compared to the shaft, the large hole gives you some room to manipulate the box/shaft. You might want to consider replacing the rubber (under the dash) seal around the tube at the firewall, they are only a few dollars, mine was pretty ratty. This was on a 65 Mustang, I am assuming same for 65 Falcon. Good luck Jeff
