What manual trans bell housing fits the 428? I am told the 360,390 and 427 all will work. Is this true? Also, what flywheels will work? Told a 390 will but you have to change the gear, is this true?

I'm certainly no FE expert, but isn't the 428 (and possibly the 410 Mercury) externally balanced (intentional unbalance), while the rest of the engine family is internal (zero balance)? If so, this means that you'd need a 428 specific flywheel, or have the crankshaft zero balanced.Your best bet on the bellhousing would probably be off of a 390, based on production numbers. The 406/427 stuff would be both hard to find, and rather pricy if you did! The 352 and 360 bellhousings should work too, although there may be some minor differences in bellhousings before and after the switch from T-10 to toploader. The 360 is a "truck only" engine, I believe. I see you're from Winfield. I know a couple of hard core FE guys pretty close to you. Shoot me an e-mail, and I'll send you their contact info. ------------------ Mark Walton '83 Mustang GT 2.3 Turbo NHRA Stocker - it's alive! I have a bell housing and flywheel from a 360 FE truck. They will fit the block and crank for sure. They are cast iron.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Alex, so is the 360 flywheel externally balanced like the 428? And, does the 360 fit or accept an 11" or 11.5" clutch? Will this combo work with the 428?

Externally balanced and 11 inch clutch. It is used stuff in decent shape.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Wayne, what application are planning on (car, truck, car or truck trans.) The FE pickup bellhousings are a bit deeper that a car unit, so the input tip may not go into the pilot bushing enough. I also don`t know if the truck 4 speed trans bolt pattern is compatible with a car trans. On the FE`s, only the 410&428`s were externaly ballanced, however I believe that all 410`s were automatics, so that would mean you either need a 428 flywheel, or buy an aftermarket unit. I have seen 390`s with either 11 or 11 1/2" clutches, every 360 I`ve seen was 11", every 428 I`ve seen was 11 1/2". Also, some of the big cars used a bellhousing with the provision for the clutch linkage cross shaft (Z bar) to attatch to the bellhousing itself, while most others used a pivot plate that bolts to the engine block. The 428 CJ bellhousings I`ve owned have a noticable bulge around the middle of the top side, presumably for the larger pressure plate to clear.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. I am putting it into a 69 Mach1 with a T10 or a toploader. Will the the input tip go in far enough on either trans and will either one bolt up to the 360 truck bell housing?
