I'm 0-4 in the hunt for junk yard axles. They either don't have them or don't want to sell them individually. So, the hell with em! I'm gonna pony up and buy some new race axles instead. I did some lookin around on-line, but it seems that 28-spline and race axles are seldom used in the same sentence. Anybody know of some quality 28-spliners for under $300/pair? So far all I've found is Moser. JD

JD,
You may want to take a look at these:

http://emporium.markwilliams.com/prodinfo.asp?prodid=3240

They're saying they can be had for $295/pair.....oval track or straight track.

GOOD LUCK!
Ryan

Check Currie also. I think they sell "rebuilt" as well as new.

Are you looking for stock axles? I've got the 28-spline axles out of my '70 if you could use them.

Thanks for the responces, guys. Unfortunatly, it seems like the Mark Williams axles are for oval track, and the Currie axles are "not for competition use". What do you think the difference is between oval track and drag race? And what exactly is "competition use"? I really regret buying a 28 spline Locker instead of the 31. Now, my options seem limited. JD,

28 splined Moser axles have held up fine on our '66. It cuts 1.42 60'ers launching off a trans brake and runs 10.60s at 124 mph. Don't be afraid of Moser's 28 splined axles.

Now, that's some incouraging information, Steve! If they held up to that kind of abuse, they should be just fine for me. Thanks, JD

Yeah, my buddy is running 28 spline Mosers in his small motor 4 speed car with bonzi launches and they are holding up fine.

I agree on the Mosers. Good axle for the money.
The only problems I've had with 28 spline axles were in some early 8" rears. And even then the damage usually occurs when using slicks, high rpm stick shift launches with 400+ HP engines, and on open rear ends. When you have an open rearend or even a posi that allows slippage, one axle winds up taking the brunt of the load and usually twists at the splines. A spool or positive locking rearend does a lot to even the load out to both axles. 56 splines pulling is a lot safer than only 28.

That's a cool article. Their driver is Vitor, a friend of ours that Melissa took out first round at the finals. Trust me 28 slined aftermarket axles on a spool can handle 10 second passes for years.

Tried to attach a digital pic of my axle splines, but I've never done it before. Harder than I thought.....or maybe it's the beer. JD

It was time to change it. However, I have twisted them twice that far without breaking.

We replaced that axle with another stock axle (31 spline) cut to the length we needed. It didn't make a full year before it broke. At that point they were replaced with aftermarket axles. That was almost 10 yrs ago, and they are still in that car today.

It's suprising that a hardened steel axle would twist that much before snappage. JD

That's the only good thing about stock 8" axles. They WILL twist before they break.

I've got some twisted just like that. Keep them just in case somebody ever needs an axle in a hurry.

Well, I just ordered a set of Moser 28 spline alloy axles complete with bearings, retainer plates, and studs. They should be in the car in a week or so. JD

Johnny,

Paint a straight line down the axles before you instal them. Then you'll be able to check them for twist/straightness in the future.

Thanks for the tip, Steve. I plan on doing just that. Old timers say no more than 90 deg. from tip to tip. Sound about right? JD
