Well, I made it to the track yesterday like I was planning. Had a pretty good day. Weather was pretty nice, about 50 and sunny. Not many people there which made it a pretty good day to make a lot of runs.

I leaned quite a few things. First, I learned that you run much faster if the secondaries open all of the way. When I first got down there I was planning on making a few motor runs. I started out running a 13.657. I was thining WTF? I made another run at 13.615. So I thought it must be the jet change I made the night before. I went from 75/83 to 73/81. The motor ran fine, no hesitation but these 1/4 mile times were way slow from last time. So I put the original jets back in and made another run, 13.649.

I was pretty frustrated by then and decided I was gonna spray it and call it a day. I activated the nitrous and purged. When I made the run it was very apparent the NOS didn't come on. Only one explination for that, the carb wasn't wide open and the micro switch wasn't made. I had my wife get in the car and hold the peddle down. There was my problem. A few weeks ago I remounted my TV cable to a lower point on the carb linkage and it was limiting travel so much the secondaries were not even opening.

After I got the TV cable back to its original position I made another run. I was going to spray it again but once again the NOS didn't activate. Another check of the throtle position showed now that my carb linkage was hitting on the TV cable mount and stopping the secondaries at 70% open. I ran a 13.051.

I got the linkage completely straightend out and decided to make another motor run to see where I was at. This time the car launched hard. I had a 1.863 60' which is my best yet. I ran a 12.653 @ 107.78 MPH! Fastest ever on motor, man was I happy.

Now that I was confident I had the throttle worked out I decided to try spraying it again. I had massive tire spin, all of the way through 1st and part way through 2nd. 60' of 1.928 and a 1/4 mile of 12.302 @ 114.73mph. I also missed my shift again and ran the motor to 8K. Forgot to pull it back to 1-2 and it shifted to 3rd at 6K. One final run was in order.

This time I got it all right. Though traction was still an issue, it wasn't as bad. I got all the shifts right at 7K. I wound up with a 1.9 60' and a 12.107 @ 116.06. I was pretty happy with that but of course it left me thinking about 11's next year.

I also learned that my Auburn Pro Posi is a big part of my traction problems. I keep ending up leaving the line spinning one tire. I was better off with my poor mans posi. No biggy, I have a 9" to put in this winter and I'll run a Detriot in that. I'll then put the Auburn in my wagon. Also, learned that I get way to nuts when I run the NOS, I need to calm down and take it easy. Also, I still think I'm running too rich and would benifit from 1 or 2 size smaller jets, now that I have the linkage worked out.

It was a good year and i think I have a lot to look forward to next year. For the winter I am planning, Sub frame connectors, the 9" with the Detroit and 4.56 gears, and maybe Caltracs. I may also, though I'm not sure yet, go to a Victor JR intake.

Wow, not bad times. Even the part throttle runs are impressive!

I'll say, with that mile per hour you should be running 11's.

Oh BTW, long live the spray!!!

I hope next year I can hit the 11's, we'll see. I don't really have any upgrades planned for the motor. I just don't know if I'll ever see great 60' times. The motor seems to make plenty of power but being only a .030 over 289 it will never be a torque monster. Overall I'm very happy with it.

Here are some pictures from the day.

I'd be more then happy with those times. That 107mph and a 1.86 60 foot time. Seems like you should be able to get into the 11's on the motor with a good traction.

Take it easy on the spray you'd rather have the motor longer then better times ?

I know when I get to the track I just go nuts. Balls out to get better times.

When I first put the motor together I was thinking I would build this for now and maybe something with more cubes later. I've always felt that if this motor went to hell I'd do a 347 or a 393W, but now I'm starting to think different. I'm happy with what I have. I'm actually thinking about what I could do to make this motor last. For now it's just a thought but I am thinking about new H beam rods. I'm not sure I want to pull the motor apart at this point but I'm starting to think it would be a shame to lose this motor. Plus it is the factory block for this car.

I guess if it goes though it just means it's time for something better.
