Just built a small block for a friend & while changing valve springs after run in, #5 & #4 cyls. with 115 to 125# air pressure to hold valves closed were bubbling coolant into catch can. The machine shop he used O ringed block & left a small gap in O ring at the bottom of these cyls. You could already see traces of black where compression was blowing through the gap after approx.30 min. at 2000 or so RPM no load. Block has been decked, heads true decked also,no receiver groove in alum. heads. Shop replaced these O rings & it returned the same as before. I am thinking of installing the wire myself with as little gap as possible, maybe even overlapping with an angle cut on ends of wire. Now to the ??, anyone used copper gaskets & if so what problems were encountered? Can you use a composite type gasket like Fel Pro etc. on O rings? His machine shop says no. Can you remove rings & use reg. gasket, anyone tried this? I dont want to put this thing together with 12.68 compression, plus he wants to spray 200 shot to it & have it groove a head or block. Didnt want to do it to start with, tried to get him to have machine shop do it & when these prob. pop up they would be responsible, but NOOO. Anyhoo what sayest thou on this problem?

I have been using copper head gaskets on SBF's since 1976,
You >b> CANNOT use them succesfully without o-rings in the block and receiver grooves in the heads! No if's and's, or but's about it.

You have two choices.
1)
Install receiver grooves, re-use and spray head gaskets with KW Kopper Koat liberally.
2)
Remove the o-rings from the block and use quality head gaskets of your choice.
Preferably Victor Reintz racing composite gaskets.

O ring AND receiver groove are my thoughts exactly. However he listened to HIS machine shop contact that said the groove wasn't necessary & also said you could't remove O ring and use a composite without problems. I see no reason why you cant either, just wanted some advice from someone who has used this & knows what works & what doesn't.
