I started the website for my 331 buildup now that parts started arriving.http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/newengine.htm I will bump this thread up with an update anytime something exciting happens. Its all exciting to me since this is my first ground up engine build! ------------------ '68 coupe, '66 289 C code engine, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm

Nice page. It'll be good to keep up with it. Cool info on the piston speed. For those like myself that flunked math what's the formula for piston speed. Just curious How about my 557 BBF (4.500" stroke) at 7000 rpm? David Cole ------------------ 557 BBF Powered, alcohol injected rear engine dragster. 4.90 @ 143 1/8 mile. 1.09 60'. I've got to be crazy to drive this thing.

Your piston goes up a full stroke and down a full stroke in one revso take your stroke and double it. thats the distance your piston travels in one rev. next take your RPM (Revs/min) Multiply the two and thats your speed in inches/min (assuming you used inches for your stroke) Divide the answer by 12 to get feet/min and divide by 60 to get feet/sec Therefore: Mean Piston speed (feet/sec) = 2 x stroke(in) x speed(RPM) ---------------------------- 720 Mean piston speed is a good indicator of stresses on components, and might help decide on a cam or on some heads. My example shows that a 331 at 7500 is similar to a 302 at 8100RPM.

COOL Oooooh baby, the mid-range of those strokers in a lightweight platform does not promote rear tire longevity That's awesome Phil, glad to hear that you're building it yourself! Email me if you run into any hickups... I'd be happy to help if I can. I'll be watching this thread to see & enjoy the progress ------------------ 1965 GT coupe, 333ci aluminum headed/solid cammed stroker, four speed, 3.70:1 9" All Blue Oval, no blue bottle http://mustangsandmore.50megs.com/V8Thumper.html

Its going to be slow going. I got the pistons last night (JE pistons SRP) They forgot the spiral locks. The pin/piston fit is truly awesome. It glides right in. I need rings, bearings and those core plug things. Any advice on rings and bearings? the JE rings are very expensive. ------------------ '68 coupe, '66 289 C code engine, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm

Phil, Get ready to use your "bad word dictionary" when you go to install those spiral locks......they're a REAL bear!! They'll turn your finger tips to hamburger! Good Luck! Ryan

OK I have a few engine building questions If I install spiral locks can I get them out without ruining them?Where is the Bore diameter measured to determine "piston/bore clearance"? there is a gage point on the piston (my pistons are about 4.0275) but where is the bore measured? I have more questions but I need time to think things through. ------------------ '68 coupe, '66 289 C code engine, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm

-- Some folks may say you can reuse them, but I'd recommend NOT reusing them. -- Regarding where to measure the bore; the only direction I'm familiar with is that you should take at least two measurements; each location should be at least 1" down from the deck or 1" up from the bottom of the cylinder, they should be 90* from each other, and I've heard some say the measurements should be taken with the torque plate still bolted/torqued on top of the block..... However, not everyone HAS a torque plate, and for most non-professional engine builders (meaning MUCH tighter build specs), I'd say having it on isn't that critical when taking the measurements. Ryan

OK I talked to JE pistons, they said that my spiral locks should be included but were taped to the underside of a piston. I found them last night and feel like a dummy.Mooney! Im not going to change my username since im almost at 2000 posts! Indiana still feels like home but Georgia is rapidly catching up. I noticed from Sams board that you are paintballing Sunday? There is a paintball place across the street from me, so if thats something you enjoy you should come down. ------------------ '68 coupe, '66 289 C code engine, edel 600cfm carb, performer intake, dual exhaust http://www.geocities.com/ottouk_77/68mustang.htm
