A buddy of mine just traded for a 69 Mustang drag car with a 460. It's an older square tube chassis with ladder bars and a strut front end. It's sat for a couple of years and he wants to make it safe to drive. While it's homebuilt, it was always a good car. I can remember it years ago when it had a rather nasty 351C amd ran 5.70-5.80 in the 1/8 mile. Currently supposed to be good for 6.20-6.30 with a mild D0VE headed 460. Pics of the car are at: http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=331&groupid=66449&folderid=174864&folderview=thumbs&ck= The car has just been upgraded with new rod ends on the ladder bars and new rear QA1 coil overs. We will also re-wire and re-plumb the car over the winter, but now the attention turns to the front end. We want to rebuild the brakes, replace the slightly warped rotors, etc. The struts and brakes are some type of oem, but are unknown. The man who traded it to him was not the builder, so he doesn't know either. The rotors are solid, unvented cast iron and aren't like your typical setup in that the hub is located out in front of the rotor. The hubs were orignally 4 lug and have been re-drilled for 5 lugs. Not sure of the origin of the calipers either. The lower control arm looks like it cam from either a Pinto or MII. The rack is Pinto as are the strut rods. The strut rods are attached behind the strut, so it looks like the entite strut has been swapped side to side to make it a front steer setup. Any help? Thanks, David Cole

Vegas did not use struts, they had upper & lower control arms, with the coil springs on the lower arm. To me, it looks like the early 70`s Mercury Capri, which was fairly common up here in the early 80`s. The Datsun 240,260,280Z stuff also looked similar.------------------ 78 Fairmont 428 4 speed 10.20@130mph 80 Fairmont 302 5 speed 12.8@105mph 85 Mustang NHRA M/Stock 302 5speed. Thanks guys,Turns out it is early Mecury Capri. 76 model or so. I also posted on a BBF forum and a guy who has known the car since it was built replied to me. He knew the orignal builder. Now the task is finding parts. The brake parts can be found, but they are all special order and not cheap. Wonder if the struts are rebuildable? That would be nice as there are no new ones available. Made of unobtainium. LOL We'll also check on ball joints and other related parts as well. Yeah, the 240Z (that's ZED not Zee! ) brakes have a square wheel flange that can't be drilled to 5 stud. There are only a few sizes of balljoint tapers so adapting the Pinto rack and lower control arms to a strut is fairly easy.
