I've read before that you can put an extra shim on each side of the sidegear between it and the carrier. Is that true and if so, does it really work? Thanks

It works, but will prematurely wear out the side and spider gears. 8.8 posi units are so plentiful, I never need to do it. I replace so many with spools or aftermarket differentials that I always have a surplus.------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! Alex, how much faster do you think it will wear them out? The sidegears and spiders should be able to be picked up pretty cheaply as long as nothing else is wore out.

On an open diff this is very shortlived. The pieces that wear are metal, the hard bits flake off, the stuff turns the gear oil into a metal slurry and kills the bearings and gears. Use a normal 8.8 posi, put an extra clutch disc in it and it'll be plenty tight.

I agree with Tomp. You won't see more than a couple of hundred miles total if you are luckey. ------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator NHRA/IHRA/SRA member and licensed Superstock driver MCA member# 53321 NHRA and IHRA SS/LA & SS/MA National Record Holder '00,'01,'02,'03,& '04 First SS/MA in the TENS! I have done this mod. You replace one of the shims between the clutch plates with another clutch plate. So instead of s/c/s/c/s/c/s you have c/s/c/s/c/s/c. This mod works and I have not experienced any "extra" wear of the spider gears. The rear end in question has 160K on it and the mod was done at about 90K. I am running a 3.55 gear on a street car. There are web site that give a full description on how to do this.

Jim, the mod I am referring to uses an extra shim or two on an open carrier 8.8 in-between the side gears and carrier. After hearing what can happen, I know I won't be trying it.

You really cant stuff the 8.8 with enough shims to lock the spider gears like a 8 or 9 inch. You want to add shims till the side gear endplay is at the minimun, you could add an extra clutch and remove one steel plate but you can only get the gears so tight before they either wont install in the case or the pin wont fit between the axles. There is alway the low buck UNSAFE option of welding the gears. The 8.8 clutch plates are "loaded" by the S-spring and the side gear load. adding shims will increase the contact on the side gears making them stronger.
