How much over the nose pressure will solid flat tappet lifter handle? I have a line on some crazy sprngs but don't want to get carried away.

It all depends on the lifter.
A Schubeck will handle 300 lbs on the seat.
ANY other I would be very cautious with any more than 175-180 lbs.

A buddy of mine thought he wiped a lobe off his cam and after investigating, it turned out to be the lifter caved in on the top eating the pushrod. He was lucky no major damage.
