Just thinking about motors that made me happy. Talking about too easy. Put together a stock bore 302, stock everything , rods, Hyper pistons, bearings , blah blah blah. Even the later plastic crap that held the roller lifters. B303 cam, long tube headers, GT40P heads that were gasket matched, Edelbrock performer, 650dp holley, msd. Motor was in 2840lb Fox Coupe with 5 spd and 4.11 (9inch rear). Car went 12.84's on Mickey Thompson steet tires, and flowmasters. Took the car back the next week with slicks and uncorked headers... and promplty snapped a 28 spline 9 inch axle. Yeah!!! carnage!!

Ka-blamo! How tough are 28 spline axles? I run stock 28 spline axles in my Fairlane(3200lbs w./ me). I usually drop the hammer to the slicks at 5500, so far so good, but Catman's story scared me! Carnage!JD

Fear not Johnny 4-speed ( I like that, sounds like a cartoon superhero!) The rest of the story was I think the axle was a cut down and resplined stocker. Not for sure, I got whole rearend as was. The real fun part was I had a mini spool in the rear also, and made two quick trips (1st and 2nd gears ) towards the guy on my left until I finally realized exactly what the problem was!

MM used to snap off 28 spline FoMoCo axles on 7 inch slicks back in the 70's
They were about $24 brand new including the bearing so I used to replace them every 40-50 runs and keep a spare pair on hand at all times.
I would upgrade ASAP!

MoneyMaker, how long has your car been active as a stocker / racer?? Is it the same car since the 70's?

The car (MM) has been in my family since new.
It has raced in stock or superstock class all of it's life.
My older brother raced it sporadicly as he was in college and later over seas in the US Army.
As I recall he won class with it the few times he raced it.
I won my first class win trophy with MM in 1970 and set my first record in 1971.

24 bucks!!! I spoke to our local salvage yard yesterday, 1 driver's side 67-70 Mustang, 28 spline, integral carrier type axle $125....no gold plating or anything! I think I need to talk to another junk yard, cuz a PAIR of BRAND NEW Strange axles is only 280 dollars. There's just no sense in used at that kind of price. JD

Junk yards around here have gotten out of hand. They want 75% of new for most anything.

If you can find one, local pick n pulls seem to be most reasonable. A complete V8 for 140 bucks. A rearend for 80. And a tranny for 50. And it doesn't matter if its a 390 V8 or a 260. It's just a V8 to them. I like their prices and feel as if I've gotten a bunch of good deals at them. I think an axle runs either between 15-30 bucks. Somewhere in that range. Funny though, sometimes you go and there will be everything you were ever lookin' for and other times you can't find a damn thing.

But man all that gravels rough on your back!

Local pick and pull around here has a definate "south of the border" influence.
Fortunatly I speak fluent Spanish.

been through a few rear end pieces myself. broken 9 inch carrier caps, twisted splines on 28 spline axles, and smoked a trac-loc. got the moser 31 axels, detroit locker, and boxed the spring perches among other things. ive had a couple drive shafts and u-joints for lunch too. upgrading now is always cheaper in the long run.
